Deliberations of Doom is a deep-cut podcast about horror, examining the filmography of the great directors, asking questions about the genre, and reviewing new releases. Due to the death of Patience Robinson-Campos, we have gone on hiatus for now. We may return (as were her wishes) but time will tell.

My friends, one of the most criminally underseen John Carpenter films, "In The Mouth of Madness", is what I picked to program for tonight's Roxy Horror Picture Show at the Violet Crown Cinema in Austin. And unlike most of our shows, we just haven't sold a lot of tickets to this one. Please come make me and Roxy Midnite (our morbid mistress of doom) very happy by being our guests at "In The Mouth Of Madness". Tickets here: https://austin.violetcrown.com/movie/VC001688

Missing Patience Robinson-Campos on this day that she passed away. One of the best friends I've ever had. One of the people who could make me laugh the hardest. You are still missed deeply. I wish we could crack each other up about bad horror movies just one more time together.

Deliberations of Doom - Vol.3 Ep. 9: Found Footage Pt. 3

The Doomers take on found footage one last time in this series as they take a look at Hell House LLC, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, and Unfriended: Dark Web. If you haven't seen any of these you are missing out and we give them the props they deserve. Well, some of us do.

Deliberations of Doom - Vol.3 Ep. 8: Found Footage Pt. 2

The Doomers continue their exploration into the world of found footage horror films with a look at 2013's odd comedy-horror faux-tv broadcast WNUF Halloween Special and then we move into the Grand Guignol monster chop-shop that is 2013's Frankenstein's Army.

Deliberations of Doom Vol 3 Ep 7: Found Footage Pt 1

It took us awhile but we finally got here. It's our trio of podcasts about found footage horror films. And we're going to kick it off with the 1992 pitch black horror comedy classic from France, Man Bites Dog. Naturally, whether we wanted to or not, with this topic we have to get to 1999's The Blair Witch Project next and then it's off to the races with the Spanish Rec and Rec 2 for the win.

Deliberations of Doom Vol. 3 Ep 6 - Comedy Horror Pt 3

Chris, Alan, Drew, and Madelynne wrap up this cycle of podcasts looking at Comedy Horror films with three more modern examples. First we give the proper props to 2011's The Cabin in the Woods. Then we go a lot more obscure and weird with 2012's John Dies at the End. Finally, we end with the criminally underseen 2020's Love and Monsters.

Deliberations of Doom Vol 3 Ep 5 - Comedy Horror Pt 2

Our deep-dive into comedy horror continues with part two of our series. This time we take a look at the wildly underrated Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight from 1995. Then we swing to 2006 for a festival favorite that unfortunately never got the notice it deserved, Severance.

Deliberations of Doom Vol 3 Ep 4 - Comedy Horror Pt 1

The Doomers return after a bit of an enforced absence that we all went through. But we came back laughing as we dive into comedy horror films. Our first show in the trilogy explores 1982's Eating Raoul, 1987's Blood Diner, and 1989's Society. Tune in to hear Chris, Drew, Mads, and Alan deliver the goods.

I don't think any mainstream horror franchise has so totally and utterly 'given up' on taking itself seriously at all more than Amityville. Here are some of the other glorious titles recently: Amityville Bigfoot, Amityville Karen, Amityville Vampire, Amityville Vi****or, Amityville Dollhouse, Amityville Toybox, Amityville Clown, Amityville Shark House, Amityville Playhouse, Amityville Clownhouse, Amityville High, Amityville: Mt. Misery Rd, Amityville Thanksgiving, Witches of Amityville Academy....this is under half of them.

The new Doom Crew (Chris, Alan, Drew, and Madelynne) take up the challenge of our yearly Haunted House visit as we confront the horrors presented by the good folks at House of Torment. Check out our video of the chills and RIP Wright Sulek, our cameraman. He was a good egg. Cracked like one too.

Deliberations of Doom: Vol. 3 Ep 3 - Virus Horror

In this final leg of the viral load triptych of episodes, Chris, Alan, Madelynne, and Drew take on three more horror(?) films. First up is the 2011 film "Carriers" featuring Chris Pine, Piper Perabo, Lou Taylor Pucci, Emily VanCamp, and Kiernan Shipka; a bunch of young actors who were largely just starting to get a name for themselves at this point and here they try to survive a viral apocalypse, and each other. Then we talk 2011's "Contagion", one of Steven Soderbergh's best films and although we all agree it's not strictly speaking 'horror', it's still one of the scariest films we've ever seen. Last, we look at 2021's "In The Earth" from director Ben Wheatley, a folk, viral, psychedelic, eco, slasher...ok, it's a lot of sub-genres of horror in one shiny package.

Infestation: Fantastic Fest 2021 - Last Night in Soho, The Innocents, Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes

It's that time of year with the festival in Austin that plays some of the coolest, weirdest, craziest films coming out that you'd ever want to see. Naturally, INFESTATION will be covering all the films we saw with this being the first in a series of review podcasts talking about 2021's Fantastic Fest! In this episode, Chris, Alan, and Drew discuss:

-Edgar Wright's newest film "Last Night in Soho" featuring Thomasin McKenzie getting accepted into a prestigious fashion academy in London only to discover that she has some sort of psychic link with the past, specifically to the experiences of a ingenue singer played by Anya Taylor-Joy and some truly horrible stuff that happened to her.

-A Norwegian horror/thrilled called "The Innocents" that follows a group of under 12 years old actors who develop powerful psychic abilities and go to war with each other that ended up being one of the hits of the festival for us.

-The seriously wacky and hilarious 'structural comedy' that is "Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes", a Japanese comedy about a man who discovers that one of his computer monitors is broadcasting to the other one two minutes into the future and the hijinxs that ensue from there.

Check out our fun discussion and watch for many more in the days/week to come!

Deliberations of Doom: Vol. 3 Ep 2: Virus Horror

Doom returns to virustown as the Doom Crew take on yet more films in the Virus category taking a look at the 1975 David Cronenberg body horror classic "Shivers", the arguably criminally underseen Japan-American 1980 film "Virus" (by the director of "Battle Royale"), and the 2008 festival hit 'language as the dangerous virus' horror, "Pontypool".

It's been a little over two years since the last episode of our horror-centric show, Deliberations of Doom (not counting the reunion tribute show we did for Other Worlds festival on video). The sad reason for that is, one of our hosts and dearest friends, Patience, passed away. She made it very clear she wanted the show to go on, and so, after much 'deliberation' and cast consideration, we introduce to you the new (and old) Doom Crew: Chris, Alan, Madelynne, and Drew.

For this and the next two episodes, the team looks at horror films that involve viruses (trying to steer clear of specific zombie stuff). I suppose the reasoning is self-evident. If we've learned nothing else this last year, it's that the only thing scarier than the horrors of a viral situation, is people acting horribly during a viral situation. And with that, we bring you the movies we look at in this episode...

Feel like I should warn ya, just got this notification emailed to me:

40 years after John Landis’s hirsute lycanthrope took to London, An American Werewolf is set to howl again – this time, in Rome.

The brainchild of actor, writer, director and producer Hunter G.Williams, An American Werewolf in Rome will pay tribute to the classic 1981 film while offering its own unique spin on the sub-genre.

Currently being shopped, the script is described as a horror-comedy that serves as a love letter to the classic werewolf film while also showcases the epic history of Rome.
Says Williams, “Here, we’ve a chance to do something incredibly fun but also transport a postcard to Rome into the mailbox of every theater. Further, cinemagoers are ready for another werewolf film that successfully combines horror and humour. Hopefully this silver bullet will be firing shortly.”

Williams’ longtime producing partner, Justin Chien and longtime collaborator, Nadia Lanfranconi are on board in a producing capacity.

Williams’ most recent script The Madness Within resulted in a critically acclaimed 2019 feature.

Posted because A: it's funny and B: yet again (thanks to an idiot on Twitter who is outraged that people disagree with them) we're asking what movies are horror and what aren't, like a film can't be more than one thing or that being 'horror' is somehow a 'less-than' genre. Cut it out.

Guarantee you haven't heard of a lot of these. And for some, that's understandable. But I definitely want to find the Japanese "Evil Dead" called "Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell".

Love The Exorcist, Evil Dead or other horror classics? Well, these international knock-offs aren't them — but many are still worth watching.
