Not an event, but still neat-o: our friend Gavin Castleton released a new edition of his Halloween songs collection, and you can hear me on "Falling" (our 2013 cover of the Twin Peaks theme, and possibly my favorite recording I've ever sung on).

Last week I lost my best (canine) friend, and while she had a long, happy life, and while I knew it was coming, my heart is utterly in pieces knowing I'll never see her again.
.. just in time (grief/loss processing, etc), I happen to have my first IRL One Big Dark Room performance since before the pandemic scheduled for the end of this month here in Austin -

I started writing, and subsequently recording and releasing music as this moniker (under the Love Letter Music umbrella) around 2012 when I had my first big grief experience. I was lucky to have many very understanding friends at the time who did what they could, but the only way I knew how to process anything was to write and write and write, so that's what's I did. I decided I needed a safe sandbox for those songs because they were vulnerable and heavy, so One Big Dark Room was born.

I've publicly released two albums and a single, and written at least 100 songs for this project since then, but I've only gotten to perform them out in the real world a few times. There was a whole performance-art online version that was developed throughout the pandemic and it has been a really meaningful space for me to let my creativity run wild... It's also been impactful to see others commune over their own hurts and move toward peace and healing through these songs over the years. It's nice to be able to provide some solace and comfort, especially in an area of the heart that is so tender and raw and often not cared for so well.

Since it's close to Halloween, I'm going to be leaning on the memento mori/grief tunes of the catalog. It would mean the world to me to have some friends there if you're local to Austin. 🖤 It's free. I love Batch and you probably will too if you haven't been yet. I hope you'll consider spending some time in this sacred space with me if you are able.

🕯️ 10/28/2025: Austin TX

after years in the luminiferous ether, One Big Dark Room materializes once more-

summoned to the mortal plane for a night of remembrance and release as All Hallow’s draws ever nearer...

songs of grief, loss, and the slivers of light in between… where the living and the departed may still commune.

with gregory hagen offering grounding and presence for this passage through the dark.

🤣 don't worry, I'm alive. 👋

BUT I am taking a big leap and closing the "Lex Land" chapter of my life. I'd like to give my more recent original work a clean slate and my full enthusiasm, so I'm assigning a new name to what my primary project has become over the last decade-ish.

(Short version of everything to follow: I'm changing my name to "Holly Frost"!)

I have legitimate and deeply considered reasons for making this change which I won't bore you with here, but I did want to share this move with you since you've supported all my musical antics over the years.

If you happen to be super curious about the details, I wrote a blog post about it over at my site, which is available here:
http://lovelettermusic.com/name-change

I will post here (under an updated handle) with occasional updates about Love Letter Records releases from my various projects, but I will not be releasing any more new music under the "Lex Land" penname.

Thank you for your support, and if you enjoyed what I've been making over the last few years, please come join me over at the Holly Frost FB Page for more stuff (and to hear the new releases!):

After 5 magical years since I started my live-broadcasting experiment, it's time to celebrate the program that started it all and bid it farewell (for now).

Come join me tomorrow, Friday 3/10, for a final installment of Crooner Coffee Hour (at least in its original regularly-recurring iteration... there may be some in the future for special occasions ❤️) at 11:30am eastern here on Facebook.

Like the 3rd anniversary party, I'll be hosting some fun games and giveaways, raising money for The SIMS Foundation, and, as always, I'll be taking your song requests. Kick off the weekend with a fun time and some good tunes.

(P.S. My other recurring livestream programs on Twitch will continue on! links and schedules available at http://lexlandmusic.com ✨)

🎉NEW SINGLE ("Aren't We All?") out today! 🎉
listen here>>>

About this release:
"(I'm a Dreamer) Aren't We All?" was a central musical theme for a 1929, pre-code Fox movie-musical called "Sunny Side Up" starring Janet Gaynor. An early "pop" recording of the song released that same year by a vocal group including a young Bing Crosby hit the charts. While I would personally consider it a more "obscure" standard, it has been used and performed frequently over the last century, made a lasting impact on pop culture, and was even included on John Coltrane's 1958 album "Bahia."

Over at "The Vault" (my self-hosted, Lex-Land-specific version of a Patreon membership), I've been consistently releasing an exclusive new original song to my Patrons for almost 8 years. For 2023, I will be submitting a public-release-ready cover song there also, but a month in advance of its official public release date.

For this one, I wanted to keep it sweet and simple to let the composition shine, but I did want to modernize it just a touch in that way that I like to try to do 🙃 so there are some really fun rhythmic ukulele riffs (another nod to the 20s) and a build-up to a cool half-time feel with percussion contributed by my husband Eduardo Torres 🥁

The beginning of the song has an introductory section (different from the main "meat" of the song) that is relatively common in this genre, specifically for songs that were originally written for or used in musical films, and these are called a "verse." I absolutely love finding and performing the verses for these old songs (and even add them to the songs I write in this standard-style), so I had to include this one.

If you'd like to hear all the new singles early this year, come check out everything available at The Vault! ("Aren't We All?" was the January submission, releasing everywhere else today ❤️)
