A sign that summer is on its way, metered parking goes into effect on Wednesday, May 1st.

The City of Long Branch has a new smart meter parking system powered by the Flowbird mobile app. The new system uses pay-by-plate, doing away with numbered parking spots and increasing the ease and options for paying. Flowbird meters will accept Cash and Credit. Apple Pay and Google Pay can be used via the app. Utilizing the app further simplifies the process by storing your credit card and plate information so you only need to enter information once. Meters are located in several areas throughout the City, including North Beach, Beachfront North, Pier Village, and on the oceanfront from Brighton to Morris Avenues.

New York–based startup Voltpost has spent the past three years working on a technology package aimed at meeting those curbside charging challenges, which it’s tested in small pilot projects in New York City and Detroit so far. Last month, it announced the commercial availability of its product — a modular, street-proofed system that it hopes to deploy in cities later this year.

Voltpost unveiled its new EV charging product, which is designed to tap into the electricity available in streetlights — and withstand life in urban settings.

“Most of these meters are at or near the end of their useful life, so that’s why we’re taking on this process now. Our schedule is to begin sometime, hopefully, in late 2024 … This will be a phased project, running probably through 2026,” Nick Gove, Boston’s transportation department commissioner, told the news outlet.

At this time, there is no planned increase in parking rates alongside these changes.
