Rest Easy Dear Gary Floyd
I am just coming through my third bout of Covid. I’m just snapping out of it learning the newsThe world is at a terrible loss without our favorite singer from our old favorite punk band The Dicks. I picked up Gary hitchhiking on the UT college drag in Austin. From the moment I met him I was completely enthralled and wanted to partner up with his vision. He had just returned from San Francisco and was talking on about the S*x Pistols and how he was going to start a band. He was gonna call it the Dicks and right there I announced I was gonna start a band too and name it the Stains. And right there and then our friendship began. He was working a snacks food stand on the campus and soon found myself heading to class but never making it. Instead just while away the hours, chatting about everything under the sun but especially about sexuality, freedom and social injustice. He was all punk and he inspired me so. Within a year we were playing together with the Big Boys, the Inserts, the Next, and within our great Austin scene. And soon after playing out to Houston and by July 1981 with the Dead Kennedys at the Mab in San Francisco. Gary was so beautiful, so visceral, so poignant and with so much heart and soul. He was our Janis Joplin, our MC5, our Johnny Rotten all rolled into one. He became very spiritual and lived so true with his art, music and poetry. Rest easy dear Gary Floyd!!!!
