Did you know, before enrolling at Tennessee State University, Oprah Winfrey won Miss Black Nashville & Miss Black Tennessee in 1972? In high school, she held a job at WVOL radio station, broadcasting to the Black community in Nashville, which led to a TV anchor role at WLAC. At , she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts before her rise to a worldwide media mogul.

Condolences to the family and loved ones of Abraham "Ham" Mitchell, aka Mr. CIAA, who passed away at age 95. Growing up attending the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournaments, we always paid attention to what he was wearing. Mitchell, a 2016 inductee into the CIAA Hall of Fame, was a beloved fixture at the tourney for his energy, friendly personality, and one-of-a-kind, colorful fashion. He will be missed!

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, who created the White House Initiative on HBCUs in 1980, has died. He was 100 years old.

President Carter's initiative was created via executive order to help gain access to federal programs and to strengthen the institutions as a whole.

This Mississippi Valley State decision to accept the invitation to march for inauguration is BAFFLING. Then asking the HBCU community to help them raise $350K is comical. But once we looked up the band director at Talladega College back in 2017 for that inaugural parade, it all made sense... 🤦🏾‍♂️

According to multiple sources, including Pete Thamel & Jeff Lightsy, it appears that Delaware State University is working to finalize a deal with 3X Pro Bowler Desean Jackson. This past season, Jackson served as offensive coordinator for Woodrow Wilson HS in Long Beach, CA. If this deal comes to fruition, Jackson will join his former Eagles teammate Mike Vick in the as first-year coaches.

Winston-Salem State is proud to celebrate the incredible journey of the late Elizabeth Barker Johnson, a trailblazing graduate of who first earned her degree in 1949. Seventy-seven years later, in Spring 2019, she proudly walked across the stage to receive her diploma. Now, she is honored as a member of the historic “Six Triple Eight” Battalion in Tyler Perry’s film, a powerful tribute to resilience, legacy, and perseverance. -

The United Negro College Fund is celebrating 80 years, as the nation's largest organization supporting higher education for minority students. "If someone told me four years ago what this journey would look like, I would’ve RAN AWAY. But God had other plans. Fayetteville State University gave me challenges, victories, tears, and so many moments of growth I didn’t even know I needed.

From late nights staring at a blank screen, to mornings when I thought, ‘Can I really do this?’ I pushed through. There were days I felt unstoppable and others when I felt like I was falling apart. But here I stand, a cm laude graduate with my BSW degree.

Black Girl Magic and an extra sprinkle of Don’t Play With Me because this right here? This was earned. Fayetteville State, you tried me, but you also built me into the woman that I am today. So, thank you!" 🫶🏾

The CBS Sports Classic HBCU Showcase featured two great HBCU rivalry games: #NCAT beat rival #NCCU at Club Corbett 85-72 and rightfully celebrated post-game. #Hampton beat rival #Howard 83-67 and Coach Ivan Thomas discussed the win.

Wilberforce University’s inaugural gymnastics season is underway, as it becomes Ohio's first HBCU to field a competitive gymnastics team. It's only the 3rd ever HBCU program after Fisk University and the now shuttered Talladega College program. The @wilberforcegymnastics team is bolstered by Brown Girls Do Gymnastics & Wilberforce University Gymnastics Booster Club to ensure Wilberforce’s athletes have what they need to compete at the highest level. Their season debut starts on January 4, 2025 at a multi-session collegiate meet in San Diego, marking the first of 10 competitions on their schedule. #WU #Gymnastics #Wilberforce
