Ken Smith and WRAL TV I just heard some disturbing information. I pray that it’s not true, and I look for clarity from both the station and Mr. smith.

One of the residents in the town of Enfield—where I’m mayor—shared a screen grab of you all’s coverage of Mr. Neville’s death (which happened in Enfield). The resident purports that during that coverage Mr. Smith chuckled as he was reporting.

If this happened there needs to be a clear statement apologizing to the family and friends of Mr. Neville. There should also be an explanation of how this happened during such sensitive coverage.

The statement should also explain what steps are being taken to ensure there is more dignity applied in future instances, when covering the death of a human.

4 years ago, I launched Black Male Voter Project, the nations first and only organization that has the sole purpose of increasing the participation—of Black men—in civic life. The organization prides itself on the programs which are built on the lessons of Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, me spending 20 years working on campaigns (all over this country and internationally), and an affirmative recognition that black men have a unique claim of skepticism for America’s democracy and all aspects of it happenings.

Today, during the last day of production for the short-version of the documentary about my life and my hometown, I was forced to face a trauma that I had never thought about, or least I had not thought about what it would do to my soul see it up close and personal.

And the universe is wild, bc as I was interacting with this “thing” and on the side of the road crying, two brothers that mean so much to my entire journey appeared—at separate times and unbeknownst to each other—one who lives in Raleigh and was the reason I went to the Marine Corps and the other has been in my life for as far back as Gunter St.

The odds of running into both of them at separate times on the same day and having the opportunity to share the history with both of them was overwhelming and also it actually helped me process it all.
