Conditions in certain regions of the globe are suitable for growing particular crops but weather can alter the growing conditions in those regions throughout the year. Satellite data can gauge the health of plants, which is a good indicator of crop productivity. The satellite imagery used in this visualization shows changes in vegetation in regions where maize, rice, soybeans, spring wheat and winter wheat are grown.
The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measures how dense and green plant leaves are which suggests overall vegetative health. Scientists calculate average NDVI values over a span of years to find out what is normal at each time of year. They then compare the current NDVI value for each day of year to the average computed over the set of base years to determine if the areas are more or less productive than the average. This comparison, called the NDVI Anomaly, is used in this visualization showing the changes in global crop production between 2000 and 2021. The NDVI anomaly images are useful as a measure of drought when compared to 'normal' plant health.

New NASA Technology Could Help Reduce Flight Cancellations from Volcanic Ash โ๏ธ๐
Volcanic ash clouds can be a major hazard to airplanes, leading to costly cancellations and re-routing. But a new NASA technology could help to reduce these disruptions by providing more accurate forecasts of the spread of ash clouds.
The technology, developed by NASA scientist Nickolay Krotkov, uses the NASA/NOAA/DoD Suomi NPP satellite to map the full three-dimensional structure of volcanic clouds. The satellite's Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) measures the concentration of sulfur dioxide and volcanic aerosols in the cloud, while the OMPS Limb Profiler looks backwards to measure the vertical profile of the cloud in three separate slices.
This information is then integrated into models of weather patterns to forecast the spread of the volcanic cloud. The high resolution of the vertical profiles allows for more accurate forecasts in the days, weeks, and months after an eruption.
This new technology could have a significant impact on the aviation industry, helping to reduce flight cancellations and re-routing costs. It could also help to improve public safety by providing more accurate information about the location and extent of volcanic ash clouds.
Here are some of the benefits of this new technology:
More accurate forecasts of the spread of volcanic ash clouds
Reduced flight cancellations and re-routing costs
Improved public safety
What can you do?
You can stay informed about the latest volcanic ash cloud forecasts by checking the NASA website or the website of your local weather service. You can also sign up for alerts to be notified if a volcanic ash cloud is approaching your area. @Egreenews @Inergency @Evideosecurity

๐ง๐ง๐Is the U.S. Due for Another Hurricane Katrina?
The U.S. hasn't experienced the landfall of a Category 3 hurricane or larger since 2005, when Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma all hit the U.S. coast. This is the longest period of time that has passed without a major hurricane making landfall in the U.S. since reliable records began in 1850.
So, is the U.S. due for another Hurricane Katrina?
๐ขAccording to a new NASA study, a string of nine years without a major hurricane landfall in the U.S. is likely to come along only once every 177 years. This means that the current nine-year "drought" is likely just a coincidence.
However, it's important to remember that hurricanes are still a very real threat to the U.S., even if we haven't had a major landfall in a while. The National Hurricane Center predicts that there will be an average of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean each year.
๐So, what can you do to protect yourself from a hurricane?
๐Make sure you have a hurricane plan in place. This should include knowing where to go and what to do if a hurricane is approaching your area.
๐Have a disaster supply kit that includes food, water, first aid supplies, and other essentials.
๐Stay informed about the latest hurricane forecasts and warnings.
๐Evacuate if you are ordered to do so by local officials.
๐By taking these steps, you can help to protect yourself and your loved ones from the devastating effects of a hurricane.
Here are some additional tips for staying safe during a hurricane:
If you are staying at home, make sure to board up your windows and doors.
Turn off your electricity and gas.
Stay away from windows and doors during the storm.
If you must go outside, be sure to wear sturdy shoes and clothing.
Be aware of the dangers of downed power lines and flooding.
After the storm has passed, be sure to check for damage to your home and property. If you have any concerns, contact your insurance

๐ง๐ฆSupercomputing Power Helps Scientists Better Understand Hurricanes
๐Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating hurricanes in U.S. history, causing billions of dollars in damage and killing over 1,800 people. In the years since Katrina, researchers have made significant progress in understanding the inner-core processes and environmental factors that affect the path and intensity of hurricanes.
๐ปOne of the key tools that has enabled this progress is supercomputing power. Supercomputers are the most powerful computers in the world, and they are used to run sophisticated numerical models of hurricanes. These models allow scientists to simulate the behavior of hurricanes in great detail, which can help them to better understand how hurricanes form, develop, and move.
๐ชToday's supercomputers are much more powerful than the supercomputers that were available when Katrina hit in 2005. This means that scientists can now run models with much higher resolution, which allows them to get a more accurate picture of what is happening inside a hurricane.
For example, a NASA weather and climate model was used to create simulations of Hurricane Katrina in 2015. These simulations showed how the hurricane's eyewall evolved over time and how the storm's intensity fluctuated. The simulations also showed how Katrina interacted with the ocean and the atmosphere.
The simulations of Hurricane Katrina are just one example of how supercomputing power is helping scientists to better understand hurricanes. By using supercomputers to run sophisticated numerical models, scientists are able to gain insights into the inner workings of hurricanes that would not be possible otherwise.
This improved understanding of hurricanes can help scientists to develop more accurate hurricane forecasts and warnings. It can also help to inform decisions about how to prepare for and respond to hurricanes.
๐What can you do to help?
You can help scientists to better understand hurri
๐ ๐Ozone hole to shrink below 8 million square miles by 2040 @Egreenews @Inergency @Evideosecurity
The ozone hole over Antarctica is expected to shrink below 8 million square miles by 2040, according to a new study by NASA scientists. This marks the end of an era for the ozone hole, which has been a major environmental concern since the 1980s.
โก๐ฉ๏ธ Ozone-depleting chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), are the main cause of the ozone hole. These chemicals were once widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol sprays. However, they were banned under the Montreal Protocol treaty in 1987.
๐ Since the Montreal Protocol went into effect, levels of ozone-depleting chemicals in the atmosphere have been declining. This has led to a gradual recovery of the ozone hole. However, the hole has remained larger than 8 million square miles since the early 1990s.
The new study, published in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, used data from NASA's Aura satellite to determine how much the levels of ozone-depleting chemicals in the atmosphere varied each year. This new information allowed scientists to make more accurate predictions about the future size of the ozone hole.
The study found that the ozone hole is expected to shrink below 8 million square miles by 2040. This is a significant milestone, as it means that the hole will be consistently smaller than the giant holes of the past.
Scientists will continue to use satellites to monitor the recovery of the ozone hole. They hope to see the hole close completely before the end of the century.
๐ธ๐ What does this mean for you?
A smaller ozone hole is good news for everyone. The ozone layer protects us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Too much UV radiation can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and immune system suppression.
A smaller ozone hole will also help to reduce climate change. Ozone is a greenhouse gas, so a smaller ozone hole will mean less warming

๐ญโจ The scariest thing about a hurricane is not knowing what to expect. Hurricanes are getting stronger due to climate change warming the air and oceans. NASA atmospheric scientist Mara Fuentes says NASA sees deep into hurricanes to better their power, track storms through the night, and precisely map flooding in real time. NASA shares this information with partners like NOAA for weather forecasts and FEME to support emergency responders. Before, during, and after a hurricane, NASA data is put to use by decision makers to make critical decisions.
