The Athens NEWS is a weekly controlled circulation newspaper serving Athens and Athens County, Ohio.

The award-winning newspaper is owned by APG Media of Ohio. The Athens NEWS was founded by Bruce Mitchell in the spring of 1977. Published every other week, the thin tabloid was originally sold on Athens downtown street corners for 25 cents. That fall the newspaper converted to free circulation. The Athens NEWS quickly became known for its investigative journalism, colorful personalities, and point

ed editorial stands. The paper grew in readership and stature, quickly becoming known for printing the news that no one else would. Publication frequency increased to weekly, then twice-weekly, by 1981. The Athens NEWS is now a weekly controlled circulation newspaper serving Athens and Athens County, Ohio. The paper has the largest and fastest growing circulation of any newspaper in Athens County. Known for its in-depth local news reporting, The Athens NEWS also features campus news, entertainment, and an extensive classified advertising section. With Ohio University making up an important segment of the Athens County population, The Athens NEWS is the only newspaper to effectively reach both the university and community markets.
