Established band looking for bassist who can play funky original roots music. I’m the drummer. Go to www.vincejunior.com to see videos and get info. We're a four piece band (Guitar, bass, drums, keys) and have been playing together more than 10 years. We are not a jam band, but work on meticulous arrangements where kick and bass lock in and everything else is built on that. Looking for mature player with commitment, acute awareness of where the kick lands, no substance issues, and can take and give arrangement direction for original music.

We rehearse bimonthly Tuesday or Wednesday nights, gig 2-4 times a month, have day jobs/retired. We're looking for a person who is in their 40s or up. Love George Porter, Duck Dunn, and James Jamerson. Not looking to tour. We have regular gigs at Asheville Guitar Bar and Joint Next Door. Questions, reply to this post with email or phone and I'll get back to you. Preferably folks in Asheville area. Thanks!

The parts between

Listen to one musician’s track in isolation on any record (like this one) and you might be amazed at how trivial they sound. Paul McCartney, one of the great bass players, in one the great groups of all time–it sounds a bit like a school music recital.

But we don’t listen to the tracks in isolation, because the isolation isn’t the point.

Human beings care about harmonies. About originality. About the tension that comes from the new. And we care about the dynamics between and among people who are working together.

That’s why we listen to the whole song, not one musician’s isolation track.

Do your drums sound wimpy in the mix?

Home Studio Solutions #21

Whenever I’m having a problem recording drums I always try and fix it at the source instead of grabbing the EQ k**b. About 2 years ago I was recording drums for a Papadosio record. They are a really great band and they really are very detailed about their production. They needed to get totally different drum sounds for most every song AND match the high quality samples that were used on the demo AND make sure the live drums sounded as good or better than the samples. For every song I had to retune, change mic placement and change mics. We used one basic kit and changed out snares and a few cymbals. The LAST thing I did was change EQ and that was the icing on the cake. On every song, the band thought the live drums beat the samples while getting super close to the same basic sound. That was one of the most challenging and enjoyable recording sessions I’ve ever had. Yes, it really helped that I’m a drummer. Pictured is the fabulous Mike Healy.

Drool worthy drums!! I went to visit my friend Jeff Hankin, owner and master drum maker of Carolina Drum Works last week. I have known Jeff for quite some time and every time I need something drum related he gives me way more value and service than I expect. It’s such a pleasure doing business with someone who’s so passionate and talented. I’ve got one of his steam bent snare drums on my Christmas list already. Thanks Jeff. We are lucky to have you in the Asheville music community.

Home StudioSolutions #20 for DRUMMERS

Mistakes with mic placement on drums can make or break a recording. When using close mics, If you want a fat sound with lots of attack and less overtones there’s a placement that has worked well for me. Try aiming the close mics more horizontally toward the center of the drum (from near the rim) and you will probably like the sound and need a lot less eq. A lot of folks aim the close mics almost vertically right at the edge of the drum and I have found that you get tons of overtones and less fundamental with that approach. It’s like the difference between hitting a drum in the center with a stick verses near the rim rim. The mic pics up more where you aim it. Aim it near the rim and guess what you are gonna get in your recording.

Home Studio Solutions #19 for Drummers!

How to upgrade the sound of your drum kit AND cymbals for $10!!

Some of you know that I play drums and am crazy about getting great drum sounds at Sound Temple. Here’s something a surprising number of drummers don’t know. The shape (and size) of the TIPS of your sticks play a big part in the sound of your drums and I’m not talking about nylon verses wood tips. I’m talking teardrop, round, barrel and acorn shaped WOOD tips on drum sticks. Of course the type of wood and thickness of the shaft of the sticks also play a part too but today I’m talking “tips”. Over the last year or so I’ve had the pleasure of recording a couple of terrific jazz drummers on several recording sessions that both played those Peter Erskine pointy tip drum sticks. Many jazz drummers use them because the have a very detailed and cutting sound on the ride cymbal and on the drums. This can be helpful on stage but what you may not know is that they also do a number on the low end of the toms, especially the floor tom and also the snare. They kill the low end because there’s a tiny point trying to excite the drum head. The other problem is that the sounds from the ride cymbal and hi hat goes everywhere and bleeds like crazy into every mic! Much more so than other types of drum stick tips. Try it yourself if you have different sticks with larger teardrop shaped tips verses small round tip or the pointy tips. Totally different sounds. My favorite overall stick tip is the acorn shape. It makes my ride cymbal articulate and kills some of the weird overtones (your mileage may vary) and I still get a fat sound out of my toms. Experiment and see for yourself. Let me know what you find.

Home Studio Solutions #18. Making the click track your friend (Part 2)

One of the reasons musicians hate using a click or a virtual drummer or drum machine while recording at home is because they are setting the click to the wrong tempo and then fighting to stay with it. Then they blame the click as the problem when the problem is many times just setting the click to the wrong tempo.

Start by setting the tempo to the section of the song that has the busiest lyric to where the words don’t sound rushed. This means starting to where they do sound a little rushed and work DOWN. Then try that same tempo on a section of the song where the lyrics are more sparse and this should still work. Typically musicians rush and you don't want the tempo to be too slow to where everyone fights to speed up but worse yet you don’t want the lyric to sound rushed.

Also, feel how the different tempos make your hands and body feel as you are playing. Sometimes the magic tempo will suddenly feel like the music all of a sudden locked into a groove. This is especially true for bass and drums. You can also start about 2-4 bpm SLOWER than your live performance tempo because most musicians always perform faster than what is ideal for a recording.

Slow tempo songs are the hardest to play to a click or drum machine and your secret weapon is to add more musical subdivisions at the same tempo. If the tempo is about 80 or slower always try setting the click to play eighth notes instead of quarter notes. This will REALLY help you lock in. Trust me.
