New study disputes Hunga Tonga volcano's role in 2023–24 global warm-up

Hunga Tonga's eruption presented a unique scenario: As a submarine volcano, it introduced an unprecedented amount of water v***r into the stratosphere, increasing total stratospheric water content by about 10%.

Because water v***r is a powerful greenhouse gas, Dessler says there was initial speculation that it might account for the extreme global warmth in 2023 and 2024. Instead, the results of the team's research, published Wednesday, July 24 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, reveal the opposite: The eruption actually contributed to cooling the Earth, similar to other major volcanic events.

New research from a collaborative team featuring Texas A&M University atmospheric scientist Dr. Andrew Dessler is exploring the climate impact of the 2022 Hunga Tonga volcano eruption and challenging existing assumptions about its effects in the process.

**UPDATED**
8pm advisory now at 40% development in 7 days....
Hey everyone it's time to start paying attention to the tropics as tropics may come to life over the next 7 days as two tropical waves in the central Atlantic attempt to combine. Over the next few days, the dry, dusty air from the Saharan dust layer will prevent any development. When a system has yet to develop, individual runs of a model are very unreliable and often wrong. So, what I do is look at the ensembles. It's a collection of 50 different runs of the same model to determine the range of possibilities. As you would expect, the range is huge for a non-developed tropical system. Possible outcomes include tracks into the Gulf of Mexico, toward the southeast coast, or curving out to sea. It's too early to see where these waves will go.

1. Near the Lesser and Greater Antilles:
An area of disturbed weather over the central tropical Atlantic
Ocean is expected to interact with an approaching tropical wave during the next several days. Environmental conditions are forecast to become conducive for some development in a day or two, and a tropical depression could form around midweek while the system is near or over the northern Leeward Islands, Greater Antilles or southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...medium...40 percent.

Iceberg A23A, one of the largest icebergs in the world, has recently become unstuck from the seafloor near Antarctica and is now drifting in the Southern Ocean. This iceberg calved from the Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986 and remained grounded on the seafloor of the Weddell Sea for nearly four decades. Its liberation began in the early 2020s, likely due to melting from beneath the waterline.

A23A spans approximately 40 miles across and is about 1,312 feet thick. It began drifting freely in the Weddell Sea, slowly making its way northward. By November 2023, it had moved past the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, performing a full pirouette before catching a northerly current. It is currently located midway between the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia Island, heading towards warmer waters where it is expected to eventually melt.

The iceberg's journey is closely monitored by satellites, including NASA’s Terra satellite and NOAA-21, which provide high-resolution images and track its movements. The drift of A23A from the cold Weddell Sea to the relatively warmer Southern Atlantic highlights the dynamic nature of these massive ice formations and their potential impact on marine environments as they melt and break apart.
