After teaching for 9 years in the Philippines and 6 in the US, here are the things I had to change:
1. I used to get very emotionally attached to my students. Here, I found a new way to care, by supporting their independence while still being a caring teacher;
2. I learned to balance my time better. Before, I spent nearly all my time on school work including sabado, lingo or holidays. Here, I saw how important it is to also rest and recharge, so I can be a better teacher when Iβm in the classroom;
3. I used to wait for instructions. Evrytime I see post on facebook, napapacomment ako ng "too risky to share" but here, I found my voice and started sharing my own suggestions and itβs been appreciated!
4. I learned that a noisy classroom can be a learning classroom. I used to believe quiet equals learning. Here, I saw students deeply engaged in group work and discussions, and thatβs a good kind of noise!
5. I learned itβs okay not to know everything. Before, I felt I had to have all the answers. Now, I enjoy saying, βLetβs find out together!β It makes learning more real;
6. I learned to step back and let students lead. I used to guide every step, I lecture and discuss sa entire period--maghapon. Here, I give clear directions and let students figure things out more on their own;
7. I used to assign a lot, kasi dapat matapos lahat ng learning competencies. Here, I focus on meaningful assignments/activities that really help students learn, not just keep them busy;
8. I learned to adapt and keep growing. My teaching style has evolved not because the old way was wrong, but because Iβm growing with my students in a new place.
Every place has its own way of teaching and learning. Iβm grateful for all Iβve learned, nuon and ngayon and Iβm still growing every day! πΊπΈπͺπΌππΌβ€οΈπ¨βπ«π©π»βπ«ππΈπͺ¬π§Ώ
