“TENACITY” BY TOM O’DRISCOLL

“Tenacity” is a track by singer-songwriter Tom O’Driscoll. This song was released quite a few years ago, but is looking to remerge due to its lyrics and message being just as relevant in today’s world as it was when it was written.
After a mellow start with acoustic guitar, played beautifully I may add, the backing band kicks in with a raucous acoustic/indie sounding romp guaranteed to get the listener tapping their feet and humming along in no time.
Tom is clearly an accomplished singer-songwriter, and if “Tenacity” is an accurate representation of the rest of his work, I and indeed music fans everywhere would like to hear more. This is a great sounding song with a wide appeal amongst the general music listening population. It has spirit, rhythm with a serious message in the lyrics.
The tune is a throwback to lots of acoustic based indie-pop of the early nineties such as The La’s, Belle and Sebastian and even earlier with a nod to seminal eighties Bristol based legends The Blue Aeroplanes.
The musicianship on this record by all players is first rate. It is well produced and superbly balanced. Tom has a subtle and very English vocal style, I heard a few echoes of Ray Davies of The Kinks in there. “Tenacity” has intelligent and intricate lyrics which suit the song perfectly. There is a groovy, fuzz-laden electric guitar solo at the very end of the song which is a nice touch, but added anywhere else would have been a mistake.
Overall I love the song’s vibe. Yes, it is quintessentially British in sound, but that is not a bad thing. It would appeal to music fans overseas, especially those for a fondness for British artists. What I like most about this track is that it sounds like a basic kind of a song, easily put together, but it's really nothing like that at all. Listen closer; There is a lot going on musically and it will take a few listens before you hear all of the piece’s complexities and nuances.
This is a well crafted song, extremely well executed and worthy of a wider audience. Get cracking Tom, we need to hear more like this please.
