Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the finest engravers of the 18th century. Here is an example of one of his masterpieces of printmaking.

The detail with which he produced his architectural captures of Rome is unmatched by any printmaker who ever lived, and his reproduction of ancient architectural precedents have influenced many architects up to the present day.
