I am delighted to announce that Jan Scruggs, Founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the moving force behind creating the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC, has become a member of The World War II Foundation’s Board of Advisors.

We are delighted to have Jan on board and look forward to working together.

A brief bio of Jan is below.

Jan Scruggs was a rifleman in Vietnam with the US Army’s 199th Light Infantry Brigade decorated for gallantry in action as well as with the Purple Heart. He spent 19 months on active duty. A number of years after his military service Jan founded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (“VVMF”) with the intention of creating a memorial to American service members killed in the Vietnam War. He led the fundraising effort for the memorial and spearheaded the VVMF's legislative effort to get Congress to authorize the memorial and approve its location on the National Mall in DC. Jan also shepherded the memorial's controversial design past the United States Commission of Fine Arts and other federal and local agencies. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, known as “The Wall”, was dedicated in November 1982. “The Wall” is engraved with the names of over 58,000 Americans who died in the Vietnam War. "The Wall" is the most visited memorial on the National Mall with over Five Million people visiting annually.

Jan is recognized as an Expert on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and helped bring about the nationwide Vet Center program. His hope was that “The Wall” would help veterans to heal. He has written articles for The Washington Post and Military Medicine.

Jan has a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from American University. He also has a law degree from the University of Maryland and is a member of the Washington DC Bar Association. Jan was appointed Chairman of the Selective Service National Appeals Board by President Obama. Jan is now semi-retired enjoying life in Annapolis, Maryland.

I met some really nice people today who needed a name rubbing at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. These people were from Indiana.
