What is a DJ’s job?

Some would say a DJ’s job is to play music, which is the bare minimum. Others would say a DJ makes announcements, some would specify a hosting role. I’ve heard that a DJ’s job is to create a mood, vibe, and an atmosphere. In my opinion, these are all absolutely correct, and are a minimum. Now, here’s what sets us apart from most:

I believe that my responsibilities as part of a wedding team is to serve in any capacity that may present itself—not only when asked.

If there are chairs to be set, chair covers to be places, and sashes to be tied, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Candles need to be lit? Light them. Floor needs to be swept? Find a broom and sweep it. Now, these may all be things that a DJ isn’t comfortable with (slightly more intricate jobs like tying sashes), but the key is to get in the middle of the mess. No one is going to be mad at an attempt to assist.

Now, why should a DJ do this, when their hired job is the minimum I listed above? Will people be upset if you don’t? Certainly not.

It does, however, set you apart, help the flow and energy of the night (earlier things are together, the earlier it can establish a mood).

It also makes the venues you work at like family. It brings you into the fold and makes the referrals more personal when they come across. You’ve been in the trenches with them, and you’ve showed that you’re willing to support them when needed. When you arrive, they’re excited to see you, and you instantly have a good start to the day. Our venues we work at often are like family. I know their names, and they know mine.

So yeah, that’s what a DJ’s job is.
