State of Opportunity

State of Opportunity Exposing the barriers children of low income families face in achieving success in Michigan. State of Opportunity is funded by a grant from the W.K.

State of Opportunity is a multi-year reporting and community engagement project from Michigan Radio focused on children in Michigan affected by poverty. It is designed to shed light on problems facing Michigan’s underserved children, and help identify causes and solutions. State of Opportunity reporters are examining the impact of healthcare, schools, family, local communities, and public policy o

n child development…from cradle to college. The project utilizes documentary feature reports, first-person storytelling, youth journalists, a robust online portal, and Michigan Radio’s Public Insight Network to expose barriers to achieving success for children of low income families in Michigan. State of Opportunity will also engage community members and people directly affected by poverty. It will provide opportunities to share concerns and connect with community resources to help teach people to better advocate for themselves and their children through town hall discussions, panel events and several planned youth policymaker forums.
