SNOW SQUALL WARNING effective until 9PM for Polk, Story, Marshall, Jasper, NW Marion, Warren, Clarke, Dallas counties. A snow squall is a brief period of intense snow that can lead to white out conditions. Avoid travel on highways and interstates until the warning ends.

Gravel roads are covered with snow in most of SW Iowa this afternoon. Here is a picture from Corning at 3:00. Blacktops and highways are mostly wet, but slick. Ice is forming on bridges and overpasses.

Due to moderate to heavy snowfall expected across much of the state, Winter Storm Watches, Advisories, and Warnings have been issued for nearly the entire state through Tuesday evening.

Take a look at this hour-by-hour radar forecast beginning at 11AM tomorrow morning. Some of the heaviest snow looks to fall later in the evening on Monday but snowfall will continue through much of Tuesday and looks to mostly exit the state by 6PM.

❄️ ITS GONNA ! ❄️

Moderate to heavy heavy snow will spread across Iowa from Monday afternoon in central Iowa and last into mid-afternoon to early-evening Tuesday. A solid 7”-10” is very likely across parts of central Iowa. The highest snowfall accumulations across southern Iowa with lesser totals in north-central Iowa. As snow wraps up on Tuesday afternoon and evening, winds will increase with gusts of 35 to 40 mph or greater possible. This could result in a period of blowing and drifting snow.

A large low pressure system currently in the northern Pacific Ocean is expected to bring the chance for accumulating snow early next week. Minor winter weather impacts with the current track of the system look most likely across the southern half of Iowa (50-60%+). Specific details are expected to come to light over the next few days, so please continue to closely monitor the forecast and plan accordingly for potential winter weather impacts.

A mix of freezing drizzle and light snow is expected this evening, mainly over north-central and northeast Iowa. Minor icing could occur especially on elevated and untreated surfaces. Precipitation is expected to change to all light snow after midnight. Snow accumulations are expected to remain under one inch, with the higher amounts in northeast portions of the state.

Estimated snowfall totals for northwestern communities will be around an inch of snowfall with 2-3" amounts in isolated areas. Even with only an inch or two of snowfall, roads can become slick and travel hazardous. Please exercise caution if you plan on traveling in these areas on Thursday.

We will continue to see warming temperatures in the coming days. The Climate Prediction Center's 6–10-day temperature outlook shows the entire state with at least a 50% chance of seeing above average temperatures for the first week of January.
