Good morning, Aurora Lovers! Did you miss us? Things have been a little quiet - but this morning we had a bit of a present dropped off by our friend, the Sun! What is it? Why it's a mighty fine X-Class solar flare! The kind we really REALLY like! An X1.8 to be exact!

Now we wait to see if there's an Earth facing CME associated with this massive flare (we think there will be) and we hope for beautiful viewing conditions!

Stay tuned for more information soon!

Today marked the very last 7pm or later sunset here in the Northern Hemisphere. We are quickly descending into the world of 5pm winter darkness.

Over the next few nights, we'll be given a bit of compensation for all that with the appearance of Comet C/2023 A3 - Tsuchinshan-ATLAS in our western sky shortly after sunset.

This comet is a long orbit comet with a roughly 1.4 billion year long inbound and 235,000 year long outbound orbital period and a very large nucleus making it the brightest comet we've seen in 27 years.

ISC's Jeff Watts captured this icy celestial beauty tonight near Anderson, IN!
Have you seen the ? We wanna see!

Good news, Aurora Lovers! It's official! We have entered solar maximum and will continue to be in solar maximum for the next couple of years.

It's not unlikely that we'll see more events like May and this past event as we go through this peak in solar activity.

Stay tuned for more information!

If this data holds, there could be lively high-latitude displays that could produce substorms strong enough for mid-latitude viewing on the horizon for northern IN.

Sadly, for those living in Northern IN, tonight is going to be cloudy, cold, and anything but cooperative for comet or Aurora hunting.

Good afternoon, Aurora Lovers! Man... Last night was a heck of a show and kept on rocking clear through dawn!

We've received a ton of questions about what we can expect tonight, so we're going to break it down.

What do we know? The core of yesterday's solar storm/CME that impacted Earth is now beyond the third rock from the sun, so we're headed back into neutral territory as far as the Bz. That said, solar winds may still fluctuate and that is noted in the SWPC's G2 geomagnetic storm watch that will stay in effect through the rest of today (Friday, October 11).

What does this mean? We may or may not see lights tonight in areas like northern IN. If we do, they won't be the explosion of color overhead like we saw yesterday. They'll likely be on the horizon if at all.

That said... One never truly knows what the Aurora will do. The ability to forecast her is still very much in its infancy - but we're having a lot of fun learning!

If anything can be taken from last night it's that 99% of Aurora Apps are complete trash and should be taken with a grain of salt. So many people were reporting a 1% chance on their app while actively viewing the lights dancing over head! It's laughable - or at least it would be if it weren't preventing people from seeing the lights.

Anyway, we're exhausted after a long long night, but we promise to keep you posted on any news.

Look for our official collage of color later today!

Guess what, Aurora Lovers! The Aurora is still strong and visible right now! Data suggests another substorm is building! This could take some time, but it's worth the wait!

What a night!

We are NOT done tonight, Indiana!!!! Another substorm is building! Be patient, she expanded A LOT of energy and it can take a minute for her to gather herself up for another burst!

Be patient, Padawans! Good things come to those who wait!

G4 levels (Kp 8) have again been reached during this geomagnetic storm and solar winds remain elevated!

Lady Luck appears to be on our side and it's becoming more and more likely that the US will experience a spectacular night of Auroral displays as far south as Alabama and even Florida so long as conditions continue to progress the way they are!

You can be that we'll be watching and monitoring data as darkness falls and the night goes on!

Guess what, Aurora Lovers! IT'S HAPPENING!

The darkside of the world is getting quite a show put on for them right now and we are super duper optimistic that we will have front row seats for a show of our own!

We have several hours before dark, but we're hopeful the data will continue to hold and look incredible when darkness finally falls for us!

You'll want to be outside after dark and looking north from the darkest vantage point you can find!
