Well done mama! So glad she knew to be prepared and everyone is safe!

This morning at 745 Am on their way to Christmas celebrations, this Alaskan family experienced an avalanche and lived to tell the tale. Mom did everything right including packing emergency snow gear for kids and following instructions of DOT to leave the scene as quickly as possible. Avalanches can continue to slide and waiting in a slide zone is very dangerous. Friends were able to pick them up and bring them home. This is a valuable lesson to keep emergency bags packed even for a routine trip. We wish you all a safe and boring Christmas journey.

Stay safe out there- and don’t drink & drive.

While training on the Denali highway one of our teams was hit by a Snowmachine. Josiah, Isaac, and I had teams of 9, 10, and 12 dogs respectively. Josiah’s team was hit by a snowmachine traveling ~65mph in the opposite direction. Of the nine dogs in the team one was killed instantly, one had several broken legs and died within an hour, three had compound fractures or limbs nearly amputated by the impact, and the remaining four had minor injuries (by comparison). Josiah has some bruising and a cut, but is otherwise OK.

The three critical dogs are Whopper, Sigfried, and Houdini. Whopper has had his rear left leg amputated, but is otherwise stable. Sigfried has gone through surgery, is stable, and we are hopeful that he will keep his rear left leg. Houdini has a rear leg that needs to be amputated, but also has inflammation in his lungs that makes a surgery at this time very risky. We are monitoring him closely and he will be going into surgery as soon as advisable. All three have a long road to partial recovery in front of them and in Houdini’s case, with a major surgery still ahead, a positive outcome is far from guaranteed.

The snowmachiners did stop, but appeared to be quite intoxicated and were of little help.

Please do not drink and drive this weekend. And remember, there are other users on the trails.

Tomorrow, Thursday, November 9th is a Remote Learning Day due to hazardous weather and road conditions.

Employees should follow emergency closure procedures for their building or department for remote learning.

The ASAA State Volleyball tournament will go on as planned.

A decision about after-school activities and community rentals will be made by 10AM.
