Alsace is a colorful place! This cabinet- now in a museum-is typical of a 19th century home in an area that has changed hands many times. Photos like this help you understand how your ancestors lived, and also about your own tastes. Great to add to your book, too! Getting lucky! It’s always thrilling to find a painting in a museum that depicts a piece of your family’s history. This view of the village of Deinum, seen from Ritzumazjl, was painted in 1844 by Jacob Symons Bonga and perfectly fits a description of a family birth ‘in a ship’. Immigration often split families, so photos were a precious link. Dorotea DeSandre Belli (1857-1925) chose to stay behind in Italy after her sons left for Clifton NJ in 1901. When her husband returned to Italy two years later with the intention of bringing her to America, he too ended up staying.

This 1745 deed is fairly legible (for 18th century cursive) but the author’s careful highlights lets us get to the heart of it quickly and easily.
