Like most of us, Lynde Mott had always assumed swaddling clothes were used out of necessity. Perhaps Mary had nothing else, so she wrapped her newborn in swaddling, but Lynde recently taught us the reality is quite different.

Swaddling clothes were long bands of usually linen or wool that were intricately and lovingly embroidered by the young bride with great care in anticipation of her wedding day. Then, under the wedding canopy, these decorated bands would be tied around the clasped right hands of the bride and groom; hence the saying, ‘they tied the knot.”

This consecrated swaddling was then wrapped around the parents’ infant for special occasions.

When Mary wrapped Jesus in swaddling bands, it sent a recognizable signal to all in her culture that this baby, who has come down as a creation of God, is wanted, owned, embraced, loved, and is being cared for. And is further connected to a vast family of devoted followers of the One True God, the creator of Heaven and Earth.

From the Artist: "This is my oldest daughter, and my mother-in-law, Carol Williams. They are represented along with many wonderful ancestors taken from old photographs and compiled together. I wanted to create this to represent the presence of those who have gone before us. In the past few years,I have had many experiences that have taught me that we are being watched over and that we are not alone. I would also like to praise diligent family history works, like Carol, that have the Spirit of Elijah in their hearts and strive to find the lost and lonely souls waiting on the other side."-Mandy Jane Williams

Inviting others to come to Christ doesn't have to be a complicated missionary effort. Often it looks like kindness, lending a listening ear, or sharing something uplifting with those around you. It's important to remember that although we are taught to "let [our] light shine" (Matthew 5:16) and share the gospel, we are not responsible for anyone else's conversion. We are only responsible for our own and for extending the invitation through our actions (and when necessary, words).

In 2 Kings 4:8–17, a Shunammite woman showed quiet, generous kindness to the prophet Elisha. Each time he passed through her town, She prepared bread for him and invited him to share a meal. Recognizing that he was a man of God, she and her husband made ready a room in their home so he would have a place to rest during his travels.

💭 What could “making room” for God look like in your life this week?

While in jail, Joseph Smith cried to the Lord, "Where art thou?" This is often paralleled to Christ's cry, "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me" (Mark 15:34), but there is also a beautiful connection to God calling out to Adam right after Adam and Eve had eaten the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:9). He didn't chastise Adam. He didn't immediately blame him. He asked Adam where he was and invited him to come to him. This gentle invitation is extended to each of us. This week's study reminds us that often, as we are calling out to God, he is also calling out to us. As we "Draw nigh to God, he will draw nigh to [us]" (James 4:8).

Our Story

Tim Leavitt and Simon Dewey were childhood friends and kept in touch over the years. Simon was an established commercial illustrator who had created a number of religious pieces for himself and close family. Tim initially thought it would be a fun hobby helping a friend share his amazing images with a broader audience. The response was overwhelming and Tim founded Altus Fine Art, determined that if he could help his friend share his talents with the world maybe there were other artists that he could help. Altus Fine Art now publishes over 50 exceptional artists, and helps hundreds of other artists self publish their work. For the last twenty years Altus Fine Art has focused on creating affordable art for the benefit of every Christ-centered individual or family who desires to have inspirational fine art in their home.
