Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation, Don Harrington Discovery Center to hold second annual 'Face Your Fear' event

The Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2015 by Stephanie Brady, has a team of about 30 volunteers whose mission is to help orphaned and injured wildlife. Brady said the event last year was such a hit that the two nonprofits wanted to link up for a second year.

Located at 1200 Streit Drive, the Don Harrington Discovery Center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4:30 p.m. The Discovery Center provides exciting, relevant and interesting programs, while sparking curiosity in children and families.

Amarillo’s status as the cultural hub for the tri-state area can be attribute to forward-thinking movers and shakers with the courage of their convictions. As summer gives way to fall, the visual and performing arts scenes come alive in Amarillo with new seasons from Amarillo Symphony under its new musical director from London; the Amarillo Little Theatre season; the Amarillo Opera season; the Lone Star Ballet season; and Center City's Jazztober concerts. To appeal to art aficionados, the Amarillo Museum of Art has special exhibits and the Hoodoo Festival kicks off the first weekend of October with new murals through the city's Beautification Grant.

A history museum on the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum has engaged the community since it opened in 1933 and continues to reach out to the region and the world virtually and in-person.
The museum, Texas’ largest history museum with a collection of over two million artifacts, is sharing artifacts through exhibitions, its spaces through rentals and goodwill through special days.
“We want people to see this place as a place they’re welcome -- that their story is shared and that we can be part of their daily lives,” Stephanie Price, the museum’s director of marketing, said.
The museum, which opens new exhibits every year, plans to welcome the traveling exhibit from the American Museum of Natural History in New York called “Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures.” To be on display from September of 2022 to mid-spring in 2023, the exhibit complements one that opened in May, “Objects of Enchantment” that’s about fairy tales.

At the Amarillo Museum of Art you can admire artwork from around the world, including special pieces in the Price Gallery of Asian Art.

According to Claire Ekas, director of marketing, the museum also has special exhibits underway including “FriendsWithYou: The Dance” on the first floor. It features two inflated fur-covered creatures and an accompanying film and is available until Sept. 4.

On the second floor, the museum has Fantastic Visions: Surreal and Constructed Images on view through Sept. 4.

Also currently on view is Strangers in a Strange Land, which includes photographs of American visionaries and is on display through Aug. 14.

“Through the summer, we have an art exhibition called How It’s Made,” Claire says. “It includes interactive artwork, and it’s all about the ways artist have crated things and the process they use.”

The interactive ArtSpace, The Power of Color includes works from Modernist ideas focusing on design, color and form as well as how artists use color to support their intended narratives. Visitors are encouraged to consider how color can affect mood and perception.

“Our ArtSpace is really great for people who have kids,” Claire says. “They can look at the art and then create their own artwork similar to it.”

The museum is located at 2200 S Van Buren St., and admission is free.
