North Korea is the only country in the world where people are not allowed to use the internet to connect with the outside world. These rules and regulations have been imposed by the military government there.

Intranet System and Red Star

The North Korean public uses an intranet, which functions like the internet but is an internal collection of the country’s network servers. Its name is Kwangmyong. The country has its own desktop operating system, known as Red Star. Red Star even features state-approved desktop wallpapers (as seen in the photo above). The administration monitors the intranet, and foreign tourists are not allowed to use it.

Intranet services in the country are free, but only about 10 percent of people use it. There are between 1,000 and 5,000 websites on the intranet. Most of these are related to state news, propaganda, and education. They promote the ideology of the country’s leaders. Additionally, on these websites, the name of the leader is written 20 percent larger than the rest of the text. There is also an email service where all users share the same address, offering no privacy. Alongside computers, the country has around 20 million mobile phones, but these are not connected to the internet.
