Here’s why he signed up: "I signed up because I want to contribute to the resource that I utilize for one of my favorite activities, skiing in the backcountry!”

Our first Snow Pool survey of the season will go out this month. ❄️ If you haven’t done so yet, you can still sign up at https://ow.ly/e3YT50Un9QX

Unfortunately, the storm track stays mainly to the north of the Central and Southern Mountains. Dry December continues with a weakening and variable snowpack.

In the Central Mountains, Persistent Slab avalanches are possible near and above treeline, where wind-drifted snow has buried our early December drought layer. This precarious set-up is present on some east, northeast, and north-facing slopes. Meanwhile, loose dry facet sluffs are also possible and may pack a punch on steep (above about 35 degrees) and sustained terrain features. Where the snow surface is soft and sugary, expect Loose Dry avalanches on slopes nearing 40 degrees. Where you find more supportable conditions, you’ve found a potential slab avalanche concern.

In the Southern Mountains, the avalanche danger is low (1 of 5). However, LOW (1 of 5) danger does not mean no danger. This fact is highlighted by the small Wind Slab avalanche problem. The 4th rider in the group triggered this small Wind Slab avalanche on a 35-degree west-facing slope below treeline north of Silverton. They triggered the slide as they made a turn adjacent to a convex roll on a cross-loaded terrain feature.

To understand what you will be facing and how to manage it, check the forecast at Colorado.gov/avalanche for the full details.

The avalanche danger is MODERATE (2of5) around Marble, Aspen, and Crested Butte and into the main span of the Sawatch Range, where you can trigger a Persistent Slab avalanche. However, you’ll need to check the forecast to determine whether you’re dealing with an old or new Persistent Slab avalanche problem and how to deal with it. In the Southern Mountains the danger is LOW (1of5) with only a small Wind Slab problem listed in the northwest corner.

The Central and Southern Mountains have been impacted by the wind over the weekend. People reported small skier-triggered Wind Slab avalanches over the past two days in the northwestern San Juan Mountains near Telluride, including the small one pictured here from December 12. These skier-triggered avalanches occurred on northeast-facing slopes, previously wind-loaded, and the avalanches broke just below rock features close to the ridgeline. Keep your eyes peeled for rounded drifts of firm, hollow snow in features like these.

Although the avalanche danger is easing in many places across the state, the conditions are complicated. Even in areas with LOW danger, there is still a chance you could trigger an avalanche. Keep assessing the snowpack and terrain as you travel to confirm the hazard. Check the avalanche danger for location-specific information about current conditions and travel advice.

A quick moving system will bring snow chances to the area for tomorrow afternoon into Tuesday morning, which will likely cause travel issues for the Monday evening commute, especially across the southern I-25 corridor and the Palmer Divide. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Sangres, the Wets, and the southern I-25 corridor for 11 AM Monday through 5 AM Tuesday. Please use caution on slick, snow covered area roadways tomorrow, and be sure to check back for the latest forecast updates!
