Dropping tonight....

In the early 1800s, the port at Ashtabula lost nearly a dozen ships in 15 years, causing the superstitious industry to wonder if the place was cursed. We revisit a handful of the tragedies, as well as the colorful life and times of a Lake Erie "pirate" at the helm of three of those ships.

Fantastic news!
A cold case that we did our very first "UNRESOLVED" episode on has been solved.

Investigators have identified a suspect in the 1987 unsolved r**e and slaying of Janice Christensen of Cuyahoga Falls through DNA evidence.

They determined Thomas Collier Jordan was responsible for the murder of Christensen, 33, who was killed in August 1987 while jogging on a trail in Hudson. She was one of four women killed in a matter of about four months, which caused many in Akron to wonder if a serial killer was at loose. But it is becoming increasingly clear these four murders were unconnected.

In our podcast, we talked about another r**e that happened on a walking trail a few months before Janice's murder. The DNA evidence has confirmed Jordan was responsible for that as well.

We'll be doing an updated episode in the next couple of weeks, but wanted to share the news now!

Here's our episode: https://dcs.megaphone.fm/FPMN4497919201.mp3?key=97be90dc818bb14e6dee64c53b425faa&request_event_id=9802eb93-5235-40b0-b119-e1cfc2bdfb0b&timetoken=1723227200_ED37EF40F4FFC8A9FF49762EB67A0CFA

Investigators have determined who r**ed and murdered Janice Christensen. Thomas Collier Jordan, who died in 2009, also is tied to a teen's r**e.

Sunday's episode is out now...

Due to a little technical issue, looks like Sunday's episode released early, so it's available right now. It's the story of Caty Sage - a 5-year-old girl who was kidnapped, sold to Indians, raised by the Wyandot tribe of Ohio to become the wife of their chief, then discovered by a long-lost brother more than 50 years later. An incredible story from our country's early years!

Coming tonight...

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was a pioneer of shock rock - a talented musician and entertainer who delivered wildly theatrical performances. Dan and Mike explore his equally-wild life story: Raised by a tribe of Blackfoot Indians; forged his birth certificate so he could enlist in WWII at the age of 13; spent years as a professional boxer; recorded one of the top 500 songs of all time - and did it while so intoxicated he couldn't remember it!

Coming tonight:

In 1865, a slave freed by the Civil War who was living in Dayton received an unexpected letter from his former master in Tennessee, asking him to come back and work the plantation. His response was a masterpiece of satire worthy of Mark Twain. It not only caused a media sensation but inspired historians to look into the lives of both men.

Coming tonight:

The Montgomery County coroner could never say how Heather Walker died, or even when she died during the 2 1/2 months that she was missing. But her death was ruled a homicide because the 18-year-old's body was found stuffed in a trash can - and clearly she didn't put herself there. What happened to Heather that night in 2008?

Out now...

The Backroads boys recently brought you a fun episode listing the many ways in which Ohio was first in the country on a variety of things. Well they're not done finding things for Ohio to brag about. In their latest episode, they run through various social and cultural milestones that make the Buckeye State stand out, and we're talking some obscure but fascinating trivia - what business coined the term "soap opera," what Ohio president started the still-popular Easter Egg Hunt tradition at the White House, what city hosts the longest-running air show in the country. Do you know Ohio's ties to some of the most notorious serial killers? How about our connection to Mr. Coffee, Highlights magazine, the Heimlich Maneuver, the manufacturing of the first space suits. So, so much more!

In 1960, the Cal Poly Mustangs were headed home from Toledo after a gridiron loss to Bowling Green State. It was the farthest the football team had ever traveled - 1960 still being the infancy of commercial travel. But their flight only lasted 30 seconds after leaving the runway.

Dropped tonight by our Backroads team:

Dan and Mike share the story of Glenn Curtiss' historic and exciting flight to Cedar Point in 1910! It was a world record when the aviation pioneer traveled the 60-mile route from Euclid Beach. This was an era when a lot of people hadn't even laid eyes on a plane yet. The Wright Brothers were leaders in the industry, but Curtiss was right on their tale, so when Curtiss proposed breaking the record in the Wright Brothers' home state, 100,000 people turned out and lined the road to watch it.

Coming tonight:

In 1998, a Columbus inventor toasted his innovation with a couple of foreign inventors at a Grove City restaurant, then grabbed his neck, proclaimed he'd just been poisoned, and was rushed off to the hospital where he died the next day. Was Stanley Allen Meyer killed because he knew how to use water as fuel for cars? Scientists suggest there was no motivation there because his water fuel cell would never work.

We've got another train story for you. In 1865, some 20 bandits derailed a train in the Cincinnati suburb of North Bend and robbed its passengers and safe car. She wasn't seen again for three months, when road surveyors found her remains in a Pennsylvania riverbed. Who killed her? An uncle on whose property she was found? A serial child abductor who was known to be in the area that day? A neighbor later accused of ra**ng Barbie's sister? Almost 30 years later, we just don't know.

The Backroads boys take a look at Rattlesnake Island, a little patch of land near its more famous sister, Put-in-Bay. This island played a role in Ohio's early history, later became a reputed mob-controlled bootlegger's haven, and maintains a mystique because of the exclusive club there that keeps out everyone but a handful of wealthy members. Dan and Mike bet you've even heard of one of them. Find out what they learned!
