Our latest release:

An inspiring story for this inspiring season...

The story of Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor. Mary was the daughter of a New York farmer, raised by parents to believe she had no limits, and so in the mid 1800s, she got a medical degree. But away from home - including the first time she hung out her shingle at the house of an aunt in Columbus, Ohio - she learned the greater world didn't trust female doctors.

When the Civil War broke out, the determined woman went to the battlefield to tend to wounded Union soldiers - without pay and without commission, since the military refused to acknowledge her. It was Col Daniel McCook of Ohio's famous "Fighting McCooks" who contracted with her to work with his Ohio Infantry division and giving her her first military paycheck.

So many more Ohio connections to this wonderful story. Check it out!

Hey folks!

It's been a crazy busy month, and I apologize for the lack of posting here. But we've been keeping up with the episodes so I hope you've been getting your weekly Sunday and Wednesday fixes. Quick review:

Last Sunday, we introduced you to Greg Hansberry, a new podcaster, who shared with us a story he just did on a mass shooting in a Columbus nightclub that took the life of a beloved guitar player and three other men who tried to save him.

On Wednesday's "Backroads" edition, Dan told us about the Rowenites who gathered in 1925 to await the end of the world!

And tonight at 8 p.m., we're dropping a double feature - two stories from the world of poetry. Wilbur Zeigler of Fremont is one of the men responsible for the worldwide debate over whether Shakespeare wrote his own stuff. And the tragic tale of Hart Crane of Garrettsville, who threw himself off a ship at the height of his career.

Dropping tonight:

Ohio Mysteries: Backroads host Dan tells us the story of Billy Milligan - a man whose life became a landmark case in the study of people with multiple personalities. Milligan was arrested in the 1970s for a series of violent crimes, and was called "The Campus Ra**st" after being convicted of serial attacks at Ohio State University. But what made him international news was this previously unheard-of diagnosis: Doctors said Milligan had 24 distinct personalities, each with their own memories, behaviors, and identities.

Out now....

The 20th episode in our UNRESOLVED series with the Akron Beacon Journal - a truly fascinating mystery. On a snowy night in November 1974, 50-year-old Fred Hale was shot dead in his Fairlawn garage by an assassin who took aim from the distance of half a football field away. Hale had made headlines years earlier when, as a rookie Summit County Sheriff's deputy, his last parent died, leaving him the fortune his dad had made as a rubber industry inventor. People started calling him "the millionaire deputy."

Hale hinted that he was in danger, confiding in an ex-wife he'd been "flying with the crows" and was afraid he'd be shot down. On this 50th anniversary of his murder, police still don't know who the crows were - and more importantly, who had shot him down.

This collaboration with the ABJ is covered in our podcast - out now - as well as a story online at

Fred Hale, a former Summit County sheriff's deputy, was shot and killed after getting out of his car in his Fairlawn townhome on Nov. 30, 1974.

Check out our latest offering:

Dan, from Ohio Mysteries: Backroads, revisits the confounding case of Tiffany Papesh, an 8-year old-girl from Maple Heights who took a walk to her neighborhood's convenience store one carefree summer day in 1980, and never made it back home.

Complicating the case, a man confessed to killing her, then recanted. A jury found him guilty anyway despite there being no body, no weapon, no crime scene and no witnesses. As such, some still consider this an open case, and Tiffany's remains have never been found.

Dropping tonight....

In 1925, 20 teams of mushers and their sled dogs spent a week relaying precious diphtheria serum from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska to stop a deadly epidemic during a winter blizzard. Balto was the lead dog of the final team and became the face of that deadly but heroic effort. But Balto turned out to be as much an Ohio story as an Alaska one - and it's why he ended up as a taxidermy display at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. We'll tell you about his adventurous - and controversial - life!

The first in an occasional series we're calling "Short Stories." These are stories suggested by YOU, our listeners. They are diverse and fascinating topics, but proved to be too short for a full episode, so we combined them into an anthology. In this episode, we recount the history of the Ghost Ship of Lorain, relive the Christmas Eve Tragedy of 1890 in Barberton, consider the strange murder of James Thallman of Findlay, and visit the Girl in Blue who haunts Kings Island.
