Out now....
The 20th episode in our UNRESOLVED series with the Akron Beacon Journal - a truly fascinating mystery. On a snowy night in November 1974, 50-year-old Fred Hale was shot dead in his Fairlawn garage by an assassin who took aim from the distance of half a football field away. Hale had made headlines years earlier when, as a rookie Summit County Sheriff's deputy, his last parent died, leaving him the fortune his dad had made as a rubber industry inventor. People started calling him "the millionaire deputy."
Hale hinted that he was in danger, confiding in an ex-wife he'd been "flying with the crows" and was afraid he'd be shot down. On this 50th anniversary of his murder, police still don't know who the crows were - and more importantly, who had shot him down.
This collaboration with the ABJ is covered in our podcast - out now - as well as a story online at
