Dropping tonight...

Ohio landed a rare boxing match in 1975 when Mohammad Ali agreed to fight a scrapper from New Jersey - Chuck Wepner. Meanwhile, across the country on a closed-circuit TV in California, an out-of-work actor named Sylvester Stallone watched the determined Wepner and was inspired. Stallone wrote a script and got Hollywood producers to take a chance on something that has become one of the most iconic films in history: Rocky. Learn about Ohio's unique role in this piece of history.

Coming tonight....

The entire army of the American Revolution died before John Gray. The veteran from Noble County was the last of an era when he passed away in 1868 at the age of 104. We tell the story of a simple, hardworking farmer who played a role in the creation of our country and earned a unique distinction for that effort.

Beacon Journal reporter Stephanie Warsmith and I have been working on a whole new batch of UNRESOLVED episodes this week! So tonight, Steve will be putting up for you a replay of our two-part Donner Party saga - both parts combined into one episode. It's the fascinating tale of the pioneers made famous when they became stranded on a snow-covered mountain and turned to cannibalism to stay alive. Some of the most prominent people in this story were from Ohio!

Check it out. We'll be back next Sunday with a new story - and of course, check in with Dan for a new OM Backroads story every Wednesday!

Dropping tonight:

In 1941, the USDA fined Dayton-area farmer Roscoe Filburn for growing more wheat than the law allowed. Roscoe said the law shouldn't apply to him - he was growing the wheat for his family and his livestock and it wasn't going into the market. The government said by being self-sufficient, Roscoe was not participating in the agricultural economy.

Listen and find out what the Supreme Court had to say, and how Roscoe's rebellion affects other facets of American life today!

Have you heard the latest episode?

On OM Backroads, Dan explores the 1926 "shootout in Little Italy" incident in the sleepy southern Ohio town of Wellsville. Patrolman Jim Kenney was shot dead in the midst of a police scandal involving the tight lipped Italian American neighborhood. Bribery, bootleggers, and bad guys would all play a part of this scandal that would expose corruption and greed.

Dropping tonight:

Mary Draper Ingles was among some Virginia pioneers who were kidnapped by Shawnee warriors and taken to the Shawnee's base in Ohio in the early 1700s. It was not an uncommon story in that time as settlers pushed farther into the wilderness. What made her story is exceptional is that after several months, she escaped - and made a 42-day, 600-mile journey to get back to her home and her husband.

Dropping tonight...

They call him Dr. No, though they don't know who he is or, in truth, if he even exists. But a string of murders of s*x workers in the 80s led many to believe a truck driving serial killer was trolling the Interstates of Ohio. Listen to the facts of the cases and see if you agree!

Dropping tonight:

Dan from OM Backroads is with Ohio author Wendy Koile again - as well as frequent contributor Doug - as the trio discusses a really different topic: The Cholera Cemetery of Sandusky!

In 1849, a brutal and vicious cholera epidemic swept through the nation and the growing town of Sandusky was greatly impacted. Over half the town fled in terror and the brave souls that remained were left to deal with the horrors that came with the epidemic. Mysteries were left behind: Why didn't the man burying the bodies ever seem to contract the disease? Why were people slaughtering pigs in the cemetery? What happened to all the headstones?

Coming tonight....

Ohio is the birthplace of many beloved childhood toys! Tonight, we're going to share with you the origin of three of them that I guarantee most of you have (or had) in your home! They include the activity that a barber invented for his family at his kitchen table; a company that was saved after learning a teacher was using their wallpaper cleaner for art activities; and a former dentist who took a chance on a French entrepreneur.

(Without researching, can you identify which three items in our picture we are talking about?)
