HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

It's everywhere!

- It's a virus.

- Virus means it'll go away on its own. There is no cure. Antibiotics won't work.

- It's one of the most contagious viruses out there.

- Fever (sometimes high) can last for a few days.

- Kids are super grumpy with it, and their mouths hurt from the sores and a sore throat (so keep an eye on fluid intake)

- Runny nose and cough can happen.

- The rash is red bumps, sometimes with little blisters in them. Yes they're usually on the palms and soles, but are found honestly anywhere (buttocks a common place too). It should be called "Hand Foot Mouth Butt Arms Legs".

- The incubation period (time that you have it, but don't know it yet) is 3 to 6 days! No wonder entire daycare classes can be taken out by it

- It's a spring and summer virus. Super common this time of year.

- It's mostly young kids who get it. I tease it's a "Right of Passage" in childhood. However a few don't, and it's possible to catch it later in life as a teen/adult. And it's a doozy if you do.

- The skin often peels after the rash is gone, and sometimes fingernails and toenails fall off. 😟

- It's most contagious during the first week, and when blisters are open. Kids can go back to school if they haven't had a fever in 24 hours, no new sores, and the blisters are all closed/scabbed/dry.

It's super common. Try not to stress about it. Come see me if fever more than 4-5 days, or your kiddo is having a hard time drinking.
