President Yoweri Museveni has banned the importation of second hand clothes.

"They are for dead people," Museveni said, referring to second-hand clothes, also known as Mivumba in Uganda.

"When a white person dies, they gather their clothes and send them to Africa," he added.

President Museveni announced a ban on the importation of second-hand clothes with the view that people should now resort to buying new clothes because there are textile factories in Uganda that are producing them.

He also directed that with effect from the 1st of September this year there will be no more importation of electrical cables and meters and that these should be bought from factories within Uganda.

President Museveni spoke at the commissioning of 16 factories in the Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park. The event also saw the groundbreaking of nine new factories.

In 2017, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi agreed to phase out the second-hand clothes trade.

However, only Rwanda implemented the plan, introducing high taxes on second-hand clothes to deter the business.

Second-hand clothes, known as Madunusa in South Africa, Okrika in Nigeria, and Mtumba in Kenya.

Activists concerned as UN Human rights office in Uganda officially closes

Human rights activists have raised concern after the United Nations Human Rights Office in Uganda officially closed business in the country on Saturday.

Earlier this year, the Ugandan government decided not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Human Rights office in the country and on Saturday, the office officially closed business in the country.

However, according to human rights and political activists, the closure of the office will have lasting implication on the country.

These say the commission’s departure raises apprehensions about the future of human rights protection and oversight in Uganda.

According human rights lawyer, Nicholas Opiyo, the closure of the UN Human Rights office spells doom for the country.

Throughout its tenure, the United Nations human rights mission played a vital role in monitoring and advocating for the respect and preservation of human rights in the country.

Opiyo said he was worried about the absence of an international body overseeing human rights in a country like Uganda.

Other activists raised concern over the potential tough times ahead for Ugandan citizens especially ahead of the 2026 elections, casting doubt about the Uganda human right commission to be fully independent.

However, Kabyanga Godfrey, the state minister for information noted that the country shall manage even without the UN human rights since it has the Uganda human rights commission and other non-governmental organizations in the same line.

Being a homosexual is not criminal.

President Museveni has assured those who identify as homosexuals that they will not be arrested if they go for medical care.

Delivering his State of the Nation address yesterday, the president maintained that it is not criminal for one to be a homosexual because it is a result of psychological disorientation.

He says homosexuality only becomes criminal if it goes from merely being to promotion and recruitment.

Museveni has meanwhile revealed that amendments will be made to the Anti homosexuality law he recently signed arguing that there is some irrationality.

He has cited the clause which forces employers to know who is a homosexual in the company or landlords to know which tenants are homosexuals.

“Then what does the law fight? It fights these homosexuals when he or she goes from merely being and starts recruiting other people who are not psychologically disoriented like him or her, this is the law I signed,” Museveni said on Wednesday.

The president has pledged to give a detailed address on homosexuality before the end of the month.
