The Electoral Commission has scheduled a crucial stakeholders' meeting in Kalangala District for Friday, May 8, 2026, to launch the roadmap for the District Woman Representative by-election. The seat fell vacant following the death of MP-elect Helen Nakimuli. The meeting begins at 8:00 AM at the District Council Hall grounds.
"The commission is inviting political parties, religious leaders, and civil society to discuss the election schedule and guidelines," stated Julius Mucunguzi, the Electoral Commission spokesperson. "We aim to ensure a transparent process by outlining legal expectations for all participants."
The session will also include security heads and local leaders to coordinate a fair electoral cycle. This engagement marks the formal commencement of activities to fill the parliamentary vacancy.

The corridors of August House are charged with tension as the 12th Parliament prepares to elect a new Speaker. This is not just a ceremonial vote the decision will shape Parliament’s tone, agenda, and power dynamics for the next term.

DP leader and MP-Elect for Laroo-Pece, Norbert Mao, is reportedly eyeing the Speaker’s seat, setting up a high-stakes contest with Anita Among.

The NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) has endorsed Anita Among for Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker a clear signal of the ruling party’s intent to retain control and project continuity.

However, the process has not been without controversy. Some senior NRM members have publicly voiced concerns over how the NRM caucus endorsed the incumbent Speaker and Deputy Speaker without an open vote, raising questions about internal democracy and consensus within the ruling party.

The politics are layered. Anita, once a staunch FDC figure, now faces Mao, whose Democratic Party maintains a cooperation agreement with NRM. The contest raises hard questions about alliances, loyalty, the independence of Parliament, and how MPs will ultimately cast their votes.

The outcome will be a real test of party discipline, political strategy, and Parliament’s independence.

If you were an MP in the 12th Parliament, who would you vote for and why?

Mbarara at the Crossroads: Performance, Power and Faith in the Bwahika–Kibaaju Battle

Mbarara City is heading into a tense political showdown as incumbent Ritah Bwahika, running as an independent, faces off with NRM flag bearer Charity Kibaaju, a newcomer to the city’s top political race.

After losing the NRM ticket in both 2020 and the 2025 party primaries, Bwahika has once again chosen the independent route a strategy that previously delivered victory in the 2021 general elections.

But this contest goes beyond party colours. Did Bwahika meet voters’ expectations during her time in office, or does her latest primary defeat point to dissatisfaction with her performance? Was it a verdict on service delivery, or the result of internal party dynamics?

The race has also reignited debate about the role of religion in city politics. In a deeply religious electorate like Mbarara, to what extent did faith-based identity and mobilisation influence voter choices during the primaries?

Tensions between the two camps continue to escalate. Kibaaju has accused Bwahika of using NRM symbols and leaning on the image of President Museveni to retain political influence.

In response, Bwahika has openly questioned Kibaaju’s competence, responsibility, and readiness to serve as Mbarara City Woman Member of Parliament.

As the battle intensifies, the key question remains:
Is Mbarara voting on performance, faith, or political strategy and who truly has the capacity to Protect the gains?

The former minister of ethics and integrity and former Mbarara district woman MP, Miria Matembe, has called on voters in Kashari to elect leaders based on merit and integrity ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

Matembe made the appeal amid growing debate in the district after a section of leaders questioned the academic qualifications of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the District Woman MP seat, Loydah Kyarikunda Muhimbura, whose nomination was nevertheless upheld by both the electoral commission and the High court.

Walukaga Asks NUP to Return Shs 300M He Paid to Secure Party Ticket

Mathias Walukaga, the incumbent Kyengera Town Council Mayor, is demanding that the National Unity Platform (NUP) refund a staggering 300 million shillings he paid to secure the party flag for the Busiro East constituency. This demand comes after his political ambitions were conclusively extinguished by the courts.

Justice Simon Peter Kinobe, in a ruling delivered on December 21, 2025, dismissed Walukaga’s petition, upholding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to cancel his nomination. The court found that Walukaga did not possess the minimum academic qualifications when he was nominated on October 23, 2025.

The case centred on a Mature Age/Aptitude Test certificate issued by the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) on June 12, 2023. The EC, acting on a challenge by voter John Lubowa Kilimiro, determined the certificate had expired on June 12, 2025—four months before nomination day.

Speaking to journalists from his home, a visibly distressed Walukaga claimed his downfall was preceded by assurances from party officials. “Party leaders extorted this hefty amount of money after assuring me that my parliamentary seat was guaranteed once I secured a party ticket,” he alleged.

He now finds himself in a dire financial pit. “I have no money left to take care of myself and my family. I sold everything I had to buy the NUP ticket; therefore, I am completely broke,” Walukaga stated, his voice filled with emotion. “I ask the NUP leadership to refund my hard-earned money since their ticket is no longer of any value to me.”

When contacted for comment, the NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, offered a startling rebuttal. He confirmed that the party would not be refunding the money, stating it had already been used for the “struggle”—a term often used by the party to refer to its broader political mission.

However, Rubongoya suggested an alternative path for the devastated aspirant: “He should
