THE REAL STORY OF URN
THE ORIGIN OF UGANDA RALLY NEWS.
The official version of Uganda Rally News’ conception begins in Sseggujja Denis’ single room rental house. Denis, along with Facebook group admin Mwambazi Lawrence agree on using the group’s name as the official social networking mark; but before Denis had thought of a good number of names though this seemed to suit best, then “URN” – Uganda Rally News quickly became obsolete. But before all this happened, Uganda rally news existed for a good number of years as the most active Facebook group for motorsport lovers within East, Central, West and Southern Africa.
In 2008, Mwambazi Lawrence created a Facebook group with the ambition of bringing together the motorsport lovers, addicts and enthusiasts. This was done due to the fact that there was no meet up place for these petrol heads to share ideas, socialize, connect, have fun to the maximum and most of all have latest new updates around the sport, on and off events. With Uganda having the largest Rally fanbase in Africa and second in the world after Argentina, this was embraced and welcomed with a huge number of members joining within its first month of existence. This attracted neighboring countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi making the East African community completely connected. The numbers kept on increasing year by year. Later a good number of people from Cote D’Ivore, Senegal and Morocco started joining the trendy forum. Later a good number of other members from Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa joined the group.
Mwambazi Lawrence was the pioneer of the group being able to throw in updates of almost each and every event; posting results, text descriptions of running races, pictures and videos. Denis was not part of this group not until 2013 when he joined after a long search for such a place to meet the fellow sport lovers. By the time Denis joined the forum was in high gear with event updates from over 8 African Countries plus: and across boarders to Europe, Asia, Australia, South and North America. Most updates beyond Africa included WRC, Formula 1 and the Dakar Rally and this is where Denis became so engaged and picked the hype of how things worked by then. Dakar Rally which had been running in West Africa since its inauguration before it left for South America in 2001 due to Security threats within Senegal, where in finished in the capital of Dakar. In the same time frame Kenya lost the WRC Safari Rally event in 2002 and Africa at large lost to grueling motorsport events, best known for being tough and rough, bringing out the real test between man and machine. Denis being a good follower of the Dakar Rally, started blogging the Dakar with the 2015 Edition being his first.
