Kikuube Maize farmers Boosted with Free Value Addition Equipment.......................................................
President Yoweri Museveni has boosted Maize farming in Kyangwali sub-county, Kikuube district by donating to them free value additional equipment to Kyangwali Maize Farmers group.
Made up of 432 farmers, the group started in 2017 with an aim to promote modern farming, increase haggling, production and food security in the area.
Although the World Food Program-WFP constructed for them a store to help farmers keep their maize harvests and attract better prices, they would still find it difficult to realize meaningful profits because they could only sell grain.
The farmers through the Kikuube District Woman Member of Parliament Hon Tophus Kahwa Byagira wrote to President Museveni requesting for a maize milling machine which he granted and donated to them this week.
The handover took place at their store located in Ngogole 1 village, Kyangwali sub-county.
Handing over the equipment, Hon Tophus Kaahwa said the ruling government under the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni is committed to supporting Ugandans efforts geared at poverty fight.
Joyce Kyamulesere, the group treasurer however asked the government to consider extending electricity connection to their store and maize milling plant.
“We thank the president for the offer but our worry is running the machine without power is going to be too costly for us and yet we don’t want to just keep it without functioning” she said.
Recently, the Electricity Regulatory Authority announced the new approved costs of Connection of Power for all categories with least cost to a customer costing sh576,773 to get a connection that does not need a pole while where one pole is required, it costs sh1,989.135
The electricity distributor, UMEME in reaction issued a cost list for domestic consumers showing that it will now charge sh741,188 for a no-pole connection while a one police service is between sh2.3 million and sh2.7m depending on whether the cable used will be bare or insulated.
Kyamulesere said although there is a power line in the neighborhood, it will require at least one pole and a transformer to effectively run the equipment which is very expensive.
