******STARVING TRIPLETS*****
Maziina Dinavence 35 of Makwetere Village, Bitooma Town Council, Igara West County Bushenyi District has been married to Mr. Katwesigye Patrick for 13 years now. The couple is exorbitantly fertile and they have had 11 births; two of them were births of two consecutive pairs of twins which have recently been followed by triplets!Dinavence who expected delivery in March was surprised when she got premature labour pains and was rushed to Ishaka Adventist Hospital in January. After thorough diagnosis, it was discovered that the uterus had become too small to accommodate the three boys unto maturity and the three Habert, Abbias and Abel were born premature at 34 weeks. The hospital provided incubation services until the children were mature and were discharged in March. As it was with Dinavence’s womb, so it was with her breasts also. The life style of a peasant couple with numerous children was characterized by malnutrition and starvation making the mother’s body unable to produce enough breast milk to satisfy the triplets. On the other hand, she could not afford money to buy cow milk to supplement nutrition plan for Habert, Abbias and Abel. “I saw my children shrinking and I couldn’t withstand seeing them die. I decided to feed them with porridge made from plain cassava flour which I had in my house.” Dinavence narrated. The results were rather hazardous! Children were growing in reverse direction and Children’s bodies could not digest the starch in cassava porridge and they were almost dying of digestion failure. The triplets were rushed to the Hospital again.By the time we visited the Hospital, the babies were weighing 1.6kgs, 1.6kgs and 1.3 kgs respectively. The paediatrician had prescribed for them a nutritious formula in a container labelled “Cow and gate” with 36,000 price tag. Each of the baby boys is meant to feed on this formula eight times a day, and the boys can finish the container in just two days. Both parents are peasants who work in tea estates for a living with each of them earning Ugx. 3,000 whenever they go to work. The commitments to take care of triplets have occupied both parents and none of them can go to work, yet they need almost Ugx. 540,000= to feed the children on the prescribed to babies each month. It should also be noted that the consumption rate will increase as they continue to grow. On behalf of AWR 104.2 Messenger FM I call upon every generous heart to sacrifice something for these innocent souls. “Ahakuba nkaba nyine enjara mwampa eby’okurya, nkaba nyine eiriho mwampa eby’okunywa….
