Juba, South Sudan – Gen. Garang Mabil Deng is a name deeply engraved in the history of South Sudan’s liberation struggle. As a fearless and dedicated freedom fighter, he played a crucial role in the long battle for independence, making significant sacrifices to ensure a free and sovereign South Sudan.
Gen. Garang Mabil Deng hails from the heroic family of Twic Mayardit, Warrap State, in the Bahr el Ghazal region, the same lineage as Liberator Kuanyin Bol Deng, the man who fired the first bullet that sparked the struggle for South Sudan’s independence. Like his kinsman, Gen. Garang Mabil Deng devoted his entire life to the liberation cause, standing firm with the people of South Sudan in their quest for freedom.
As a senior member of Anyanya I and Anyanya II, he was among the pioneers who laid the foundation for South Sudan’s long struggle, serving with unwavering commitment and loyalty. His dedication continued through the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), where he remained a steadfast soldier in the fight against oppression.
Throughout his years of service, Gen. Garang Mabil Deng has never disappointed his people nor turned against them. Unlike others who abandoned the cause or rebelled against their own, he has remained loyal to the ideals of liberation. His commitment to South Sudan has never wavered, proving his deep love for the nation and its people.
Despite his immense contributions, Gen. Garang Mabil Deng currently holds no official position in the government of South Sudan. However, this does not diminish his legacy. His name is forever honored in the hearts of South Sudanese who recognize and appreciate his sacrifices.
