My birthday came when I was going through some emotional fatigue. It shocked one of my closest friends when I told her that I had spent most of the day in bed.

Two weeks before the D-day, I'd hosted a guest whose dumbfounding revelations left me yearning for me-time. Some quiet time! But the days are quite fast, and as someone who has since taken on a life that entirely depends on my productivity, however I spend every minute of the day, has a direct effect on my finances.

My brain demanded an immediate break, but I decided to give it an extra two weeks and take an early podcast mid-season break in June. You may have noticed that I've been a bit rare here. I've been taking more hours off the internet, meeting with people physically, reading, and watching movies and series.

Generally, I've been experiencing more peace and calm. The month, though, started in a manner that communicated everything, which meant that my podcast mid-season break was terrible timing. On 3rd June, while mingling with the women at the ARISE Women's Business Incubator Networking event, I do not remember what happened, but I felt the need to launch the Facebook app, and the first thing I saw was a post about a man who had jumped to his death at Skyz Hotel. Sad!

I remember having launched this app to look up something (which has since eluded me) but I decided to confirm the post about the Skyz Hotel incident, and among the search results was a man whose death had been posted about quite a lot, a few days before then. It was then that I decided to take the time to read this eulogy. It didn’t make sense why it had popped up among the su***de search results. Most of what I'd briefly read in his eulogies was his proficiency and success in his area of work. I think I always left it at that, but that day I learned that Babirukamu had died by su***de.

I kind of zoned out of the event. Babirukamu instantly became a person of interest. What are people saying? What could have happened? Are there chances that someone could have foreseen this misfortune? What hot takes are people sharing on this?

I read on and on. I was impressed by the people, especially men, who could “see" him and while I let off a sigh when I saw people suggested unworking solutions like marrying and having children (as if fathers and married men have never died by su***de), I wasn't surprised that many of us can easily be the reason as to why someone may choose to die by su***de.

I intimated to one of my neighbours at the Arise Women event, that someone is suspected to have died by su***de at Skyz Hotel. “Depression is real,” she responded, but I was quick to correct her, saying that while depression is one of the reasons why someone can choose to end their life, there are a lot more factors to be considered.

Two days ago, a man was found hanging at the Kampala golf course. Sigh!

***
June is men's mental health month and I've said it more often than not that the has started badly. Given our silence and misguided take on men's emotions and , I'm forced to put my break on hold. I've returned with a few phucks under my breath, especially for my bad timing. On my mind, there are two kinds of people; those triggered by the unrelenting wave of su***de news and those who've lost friends and loved ones to su***de, I pray that you find the solace and support that you need.

In the subsequent weeks, our podcast resident psychiatrist, Dr. Agaba Denis, and I will be having live sessions on the core topics related to so be on the lookout for updates related to the matter. Let us join hands in the mental health support of our fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends, grandfathers, and neighbours.

But before we get back into the advocacy work, though, allow me to send some overdue special shout-outs. To the people who took the time to wish me well on my birthday and made sure I enjoyed my day, I'm heartily grateful. To the ones who invested in my “you have received" messages, may your bankers ask you to open an extra account because the current one is overflowing.

For the love of life,
Nabu

13/05/2024

My journey to mental wellness began with a lifetime of suppressed emotions. Growing up without a father and struggling with feelings of rejection, I sought validation in a toxic relationship where I was disregarded and ultimately survived sexual assault. The pain and despair became so overwhelming that I considered taking my own life.

But then, in December of 2017, I stumbled upon Lisa Nichols' story of triumph over clinical depression. Her raw emotion and vulnerability resonated deeply with me, even though I didn't fully understand what she meant by 'clinical depression.' I don't even think I cared for what she meant, the gist in her story was in the emotions she struggled with. I was drawn to her courage and determination to change her story, and I began to follow her videos, desperate for a glimmer of hope.

As I implemented the techniques she shared, I was met with a torrent of emotions. I felt the weight of neglect, the sting of rejection, and the ache of abandonment. The mirror exercise/ words of affirmation in particular, forced me to confront the harsh reality that I had been my own worst enemy: I was one of the people who had neglected me. I loathed and blamed the people that had caused me so much pain but that affirmation exercise made me realise that I, too, had ignored my own needs, dismissed my own feelings, and prioritized others' validation over my own self-worth. This epiphany was both liberating and devastating, as I confronted the harsh truth that I had been complicit in my own suffering. It was a painful acknowledgment, but it also marked a crucial turning point in my journey towards self-awareness, self-compassion, self-accountability and ultimately, self-healing.

For six months, I cried every day, facing the darkness head-on. It was hellish, but I knew I had to push through. And slowly but surely, the blur began to clear, and I started to understand the complexity of my mental health.

Discovering Lisa's content was a turning point for me, and I'm grateful for her courage in sharing her story. Now, through my podcast, I aim to pay it forward and normalize conversations around mental health. I believe that by sharing our stories and struggles, we can break down the stigma surrounding mental health, mental illness and support one another on the path to healing and growth.

For close to a year now, the phrase "I am Here Though" has been echoing in my mind. It's become the core of my mental health advocacy, a response to those who dismiss the reality of mental suffering and an affirmation of my own resilience in overcoming the darkest of days. It's a reminder that our struggles are valid, our voices matter, and our presence is crucial. Happy Mental Health Week to all those who have supported me on this journey and to those who are still finding their way – you are seen, you are heard, and You Are Here Though.

📌Number 1.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of Mental Health Week. It will be a time for us to emphasise the importance of mental wellness and self-care.

📌Two.
We shall also extend the mother's day celebration during the week, as an acknowledgement of maternal mental health.

📌Three.
Over the next seven days, let's commit to:

- Creating a safe and supportive space for open conversations, vulnerability, and growth.
- Listening without judgment
- Share our stories without fear
- Practice self-compassion and kindness
- Embrace our imperfections and individuality
- Support one another on this mental health journey

📌Four.
This is another chance for us to break down stigmas, foster connections, and cultivate a culture of understanding and empathy. Let's make mental health a priority, not just this week, but every day.

For the love of life,
Nabu

Besides reading more books, cooking more and having more time for my loved one, this year, I am set to up my entertainment time too.

During the week that has just ended, I landed on a short clip of a little girl who sang in a recognised traditional African American gospel singing style. I scrolled through the comments hoping that I would find the name of the movie. First, came a hint that it was little Tina Turner then the full name, “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

I don't know if it should be embarrassing to say that I didn't know much about Tina Turner apart from dating her back to our parents' time. I didn't even know her name but I knew the song that was used as the title of the biopic film and perhaps I even know more songs but never really cared enough to look up the person who sang them. However, I had hints about her abusive husband and how she fought for “his” name after divorce. I don't know where I got those details but it could be from the eulogies that were shared after her demise.

This week I chose to make her my person of interest and for this writing, I'd like to share with you the lessons I drew from the 1993 film.

Yunia is the founder and host of "Adulting Out Loud". She and I explored the vision behind Adulting Out Loud and for the start of our conversation, we compared notes on what we thought Adulting would look like Vs. what we found in the real world.

Part of this conversation will give you the feels of two podcasts fist-pumping each other. You'll hear us talking a lot about what it's been like to grow in the podcasting industry and somewhere, I made Yunia, make a public promise - mostly to her listeners.
