Totems are common to a number of cultures worldwide. The totem is usually an animal or another natural figure that spiritually represents a group of related people such as a clan.

The Banyoro have their totems and highly respect them. Clan mates are not supposed to intermarry. The clans are based on patrilineal descent, meaning marrying from the same clan is marrying a close relative.

Below are some of Bunyoroโ€™s clans and the respective totems.

Empaako is a naming system practised in Bunyoro Kitara, and among other sister Bantu Tribes, with most formally a part of the the former Bunyoro Kitara Empire. There are twelve commonly used Empaako Names,

Here, Empaako are listed in alphabetical order, together with their perceived meanings showing the expected characteristics of the holders of each Empaako:

Abbala: One who loves other people unconditionally and conscientiously;

Abooki: One who underscores the roles of parents, teachers, elders, mentors, counsellors and leaders;

Abwooli: One who is diplomatic in relationships.

Acaali: One who resembles another in nature and character and who easily relates to other people;

Acaanga: This is still under research as it is not common;

Adyeeri: One who is friendly, affectionate with a big loving heart;

Akiiki: One who upholds national, community and family interests with great love, care, Kindness, responsibility, humility, honesty,etc.

Amooti: One who genuinely respects other people, thinking and speaking well of them.

Apuuli: One who has powers, abilities, skills to attract other people, exhibiting qualities often observed and admired among small children;

Araali: One who saves other people and who is perceived to have the power of thunder giving the expression โ€œAraali, Nkubaโ€;

Ateenyi: One who loves and understands a wrong doer without condoning wrong-doing;

Atwooki: One who embraces or punishes as the case may be , other people either physically or spiritually;

Okaali: One with the highest responsibility as a leader in the Kingdom that is Rukirabasaija Agutamba Omukama. It is used for Omukama only and even then by men only when greeting him.

Katashiha Fort and Caves are located in Hoima District about 3km on Hoima โ€“Biso-Butiaba Road in Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. ...

Katashiha Fort and Caves are located in Hoima District about 3km on Hoima โ€“Biso-Butiaba Road in Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. The Fort and Caves were constructed by King Kabalega in 1894 as a hide out and defence line during the war with the British. The river before you reach the site provided the first line of defence for the Kingโ€™s army. He extensively used the fort and caves to fight the war after he abandoned his palace at Mparo.

Details of the Fort and Caves
After King Kabalega and his army were attacked at Mparo in December 1893, they withdrew to Katasiha and set up a battle front. He mobilised his soldiers to dig up trenches in protective circles with many tunnels. The tunnels which were constructed within one month helped his army to move from one command post to another and the tunnels provided a cover from bullets.

Battles fought around the Fort
King Kabalega fought many battles against the British around the fort and caves. The manner in which Kabalega set up his battlefield and the seven years it took the combined forces of the British, Baganda and Sudanese to defeat him made Kabalega one of the toughest opponents to be faced by the colonialists .He later abandoned site and retreated northwards from where he waged a guerrilla war.

In 1893 the British army occuppied the fort and caves and used them as a base for military operations against King Kabalega.

Current state of the fort and caves
What remains today is a long trench partially filled by soil running in several directions. The size of underground tunnel is yet to be fully explored.
