Fears for the life of Alexei Gorinov, serving 7-year sentence for telling the truth about Russia’s war against Ukraine

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has ruled that Russian and Belarusian athletes can compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but only as "neutral athletes" without national affiliation.
This controversial decision allows qualified competitors with Russian or Belarusian passports to participate as Individual Neutral Athletes, or "AINs". It comes despite the ongoing concerns that most Russian Olympians hold military or special ranks and have voiced support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In response to the IOC’s move, the Czech magazine Reflex published a series of AI-generated uniform concepts for these "neutral" Russian and Belarusian athletes. The designs, created using the Midjourney AI art generator, are recommended for the team uniforms.
By letting Russian and Belarusian athletes sidestep bans, the IOC invites criticism over enabling propaganda for authoritarian regimes. The ensuing debate promises to be as fierce as the competition in Paris… although many countries have already announced boycott of the Games.

These put their bodies
Between us and the flaming skies,
Between us and a night as foul
As ever fell on European eyes
Between us and a fear that tore apart

Ukrainian polar explorers from the Akademik Vernadsky station unveil the enchanting spectacle of “white nights” of the Antarctic. In the late spring, where days stretch endlessly, the National Antarctic Science Centre noted 19 hours and 32 minutes of daylight on 22 November.
On that day, the sun rose on the Antarctic horizon at 03:18 and remained until 22:50. As the days progressed, the duration of daylight continued to extend. It’s a striking contrast to the polar day experienced south of the Arctic Circle, where the sun remains above the horizon for over 184 consecutive days at the South Pole.
Yet, after the Antarctic winter, the bright sun and vivid landscapes undeniably uplift the spirits of the Arctic team.
The prolonged daylight becomes more than a visual spectacle; it becomes integral to the work of meteorologists, especially during clear skies. Armed with the Microtops aerosol solar photometer, scientists meticulously measure aerosol concentrations in the atmosphere hourly. These measurements serve as the foundation for climate models not only for polar regions but for the entire planet.
In this season of longer days, ozone researchers also have their hands full. When the sky is clear, there are so many ozone measurements to be made that the scientist hardly ever leaves the ozone office located in the attic of the station.
As the days progress toward the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere on December 21, the Akademik Vernadsky station will experience the longest day, lasting 22 hours, 24 minutes, and 42 seconds. Instead of a traditional night, a mere twilight of 1.5 hours will be observed on the Antarctic landscape.

As the fight with Russia wages on, Ukraine is bolstering its domestic weapons manufacturing significantly.
🇺🇦🛠 This week Ukraine signed an agreement with the US to accelerate armaments co-production, focusing on anti-air systems, essential artillery rounds, drones and more. It also joined forces with major Italian defense companies to advance aviation, vehicles and technologies production. 🇮🇹 Most drones procured for Ukraine's military are now made right within the country as well.
With weapons supplies dwindling globally, Ukraine is keenly working to reinforce its defense industry however possible alongside Western allies. 🤝 But will expanded manufacturing be enough and fast enough to withstand Russia's relentless assaults?

When Russia invaded Ukraine, American nurse Rebekah Maciorowski felt a duty to help. Not wanting to “stand by when someone should help but didn’t,” she volunteered on the frontlines.
Deployed with Marine units in Donbas, Rebekah began teaching first aid and supplying gear, noticing the dire lack of medical preparedness. “I saw soldiers die after receiving faulty Chinese tourniquets. Good tourniquets save lives,” she explained.
Soon Rebekah was training units across the region. Despite the departure of many foreign volunteers, she stays. “Ukrainians cared for me - if there’s no food, they share; if I need somewhere to sleep, they find a corner.”
Rebekah treats injuries amidst artillery barrages and supply shortages. But, she persisists “Injured soldiers can’t wait - there are new casualties daily. Reliable supplies are crucial.”
For now, Rebekah continues serving, motivated by the resilience of Ukrainian soldiers. As she says, “Any risk I take, my soldiers take too. If they stand strong, why can’t I?”

In an astonishing reversal, yesterday arch-foes Armenia and Azerbaijan issued a joint statement announcing a landmark prisoner exchange deal and mutual confidence-building measures while committing to continue negotiations on normalizing relations and reaching a long-elusive peace treaty.
Most strikingly, Azerbaijan agreed to release 32 Armenian military personnel as a "goodwill gesture", while Armenia will free just 2 Azerbaijanis - the first mass prisoner swap in years and a major win for Armenia.
The breakthrough cements Russia's sidelining after decades of fruitless mediation between the nations dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since a 1994 ceasefire. Recent U.S. coercion seems the impetus as American diplomat visits preceded the deal emerging with Moscow conspicuously excluded.
While lasting peace remains uncertain given generations of tensions, the momentum shift raises hopes. Progress depends on Western incentives and pressure now that local dynamics transformed. But the Kremlin already faces humiliation from its own backyard with this direct Armenia-Azerbaijan reconciliation. After failed coercion and manipulation, is Russia's waning South Caucasus clout reaching its end?

Ukraine’s counteroffensive plan hinges on 2025
Ukraine will be able to seize the initiative on the battlefield in 2025 if it can hold out against Russia until the end of next year, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
The WSJ analyzed the critical problems and challenges that Ukraine has to deal with at this stage of the Russo-Ukrainian war. While economic and military support from the West is in doubt, domestic political rifts are widening as the nation’s morale plummets, the WSJ wrote.
Some Western diplomats and military strategists told the WSJ that Ukraine’s depleted armed forces need time to recover. Thus, Ukraine is unlikely to mount another major counteroffensive until 2025, according to the WSJ.

Putin announces bid for fifth presidential term
On 8 December 2023, Russia's president Vladimir Putin, who has been in power since 2000, announced that he would run for the presidency in 2024.
The Russian presidential election will be held in March 2023. The election would last three days: from 15 to 17 March.
Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia in 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2018. Shortly before the 2012 presidential elections, the term of the presidential office in Russia was extended from four to six years.
In 2008, Putin’s close friend Dmitry Medvedev (now deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council) was elected president of Russia. Medvedev appointed Putin as the Prime Minister of Russia. Putin was the Prime Minister for four years during Medvedev’s entire presidential term.

In a concerning speech to senior Russian figures, President Putin situated Russia as spearheading an effort to build a more "equitable" global order. The remarks indicate desires to dramatically expand Moscow's geopolitical influence—likely explaining the 36 trillion+ ruble 2024 budget that grows Russia's military by over 170,000 personnel.
While directly occupying Ukraine, Putin's government actively sows global instability to undermine US and allies, including stoking immigration crises to destabilize the EU. Alarmingly, Putin and elites seem undeterred by Western economic sanctions.
In his previous speeches, Putin laid bare his intention to destroy Ukraine. Unfortunately, he was not taken seriously
