‘My bosses were happy to destroy me’ – the women forced out of work by menopause

Almost a million women have left their jobs because of menopausal symptoms. Countless others are discriminated against, denied support and openly mocked. Do they need new legal protections?
In 2019, Mara’s weekly performance review meetings grew intolerable; she would sit in a cramped conference room with her supervisors only to be told that she wasn’t performing well enough. “I felt like a child,” says Mara, who is 48, lives in Hampshire and works and works as a public servant. “They would tell me off. They’d say: ‘You won’t meet this deadline, will you? You didn’t put a paragraph in this document.’”
A year earlier, Mara had had a hysterectomy, to alleviate her endometriosis. Afterwards, in surgically induced menopause, she began to experience debilitating brain fog, anxiety and depression. “I was drowning,” she says. “I was overwhelmed. I couldn’t see or think.” Doctors prescribed antidepressants and oestrogen gel, but nothing helped. Mara could barely function at work. “I couldn’t retain anything,” she says. “I had no memory. I couldn’t see or think clearly enough to do my work. I had no confidence at all. I thought I was useless.”

WPP revenues back to pre-Covid levels as advertising rebounds

Recovery at world’s biggest ad group a year earlier than predicted, with underlying revenues growing 19.3% in second quarter
WPP, the world’s biggest advertising group, has grown its revenues back to pre-pandemic levels a year sooner than expected because of a record-setting rebound in global marketing spend.
WPP reported that underlying revenues increased 19.3% in the second quarter, the fastest rate of growth the company has ever recorded, with clients ploughing money into advertising and marketing as the post-pandemic business recovery continued apace.

Chaotic scenes after twin blasts in Kabul

Chaotic scenes unfolded after two terrorist attacks occurred outside Kabul airport.

The threat level had been high for days, and the shear volume of people, the lack of bag checks, and the numbers of unprotected soldiers were an indicator that the area was an easy target.

The casualties are high, and civilians would not have noticed anyone acting strangely beforehand amid evacuations.

Some international soldiers had already withdrawn because of the threat, but the US and British forces did not have that luxury.

It is believed the su***de bomber waited until a number of soldiers approached to help a family out of the canal near the airport.

The Taliban had been cooperating with the international forces for days, and they have condemned the attack.

South Western Railway launches 10 minutes’ notice assistance scheme

Disabled or elderly passengers will no longer have to book hours or a day in advance to travel
Disabled or elderly passengers who need assistance to board trains will be able to turn up and travel rather than book six hours ahead, under a scheme launched by South Western Railway.
The launch of “assisted boarding points” at stations on SWR, one of Britain’s biggest networks, allows passengers to contact a customer service team who then alert the guard on the next available train to ensure assistance is provided.

Uber more than doubles revenues to nearly $4bn after a dismal pandemic year

In the ride-hailing service’s best quarterly report, it increased rides by 105% over last year as its delivery service grows
Uber is regaining much of the momentum it lost during the pandemic, announcing on Wednesday that its ride-hailing services saw a 105% increase and that revenue had more than doubled from this time last year.
Revenue for the company’s most recent financial quarter totaled $3.93bn, beating analysts’ expectations and signaling an emergence from the dismal conditions at the same point last year when the pandemic was keeping most people at home.

UK public’s inflation expectations have leapt, survey finds

Prediction of 3.1% in Citi/YouGov poll comes days before Bank of England meeting on interest rates
The British public expects inflation to jump over the coming year before it stabilises, according to a survey just days before the Bank of England makes its own assessment of inflation and whether it should impose higher borrowing charges to calm rising consumer prices.
The latest Citi/YouGov survey showed public inflation expectations for the next 12 months rose to 3.1% in July from 2.8% in June, taking this measure further above its long-run average, though below a peak of 3.8% reported last December.

UK finance giants plan to buy out fossil fuel plants in order to shut them

Climate campaigners say HSBC’s involvement is ‘cynical’ attempt to distract from investments in coal power
A group of the UK’s biggest financial institutions plan to hasten the phasing out of coal power in Asia by buying out fossil fuel plants in order to shut them down within 15 years.
Finance companies including lenders HSBC , Citi and BlackRock Real Assets together with UK insurer Prudential are working with the Asian Development Bank on the plans, according to a report by Reuters . There have also been “promising” early talks with Asian governments and multilateral banks.
