Do I need to grow cucumber seedlings?
Of course, cucumbers grow very well and many grow them by sowing directly into the ground, without unnecessary hassle with seedlings. However, the seedling method allows you to harvest much faster. Since both in the open ground and in greenhouses, cucumber seeds begin to germinate only after warming up the soil to 15 degrees. And in the middle lane, such a time comes, approximately, by the middle of May.
As a result, the harvest will be available only by mid-July. The seedling method of cultivation allows you to collect the first cucumbers a month earlier, which is why many gardeners use it.
What should be taken into account when sowing cucumbers?
To correctly calculate the optimal sowing time, you need to take into account two factors:
1. The optimal age of cucumber seedlings for planting is about 25-30 days
2. Characteristics of a permanent place (indoor or outdoor ground)
Under film and other stationary shelters, the soil warms up significantly faster than on open ridges, so it is possible to plant seedlings there earlier. Knowing the peculiarities of the climate of our region (warming of the soil, the timing of possible frosts) and growing conditions, we imagine a time when cucumbers will grow comfortably in a permanent place. We count from it, approximately, a month and get the optimal sowing period for cucumber seedlings.
