Heartbreaking news.

On April 15, 2024, we lost yet another Ukrainian friend of Hong Kong – civil activist Pavlo Petrychenko, who joined the Ukrainian army in 2022.

Today marks his birthday - he would have turned 32.

Pavlo was among the first prominent civil activists who supported our protests for the freedom of Hong Kong. For years, he was outspoken about the threat of communist China and always stood with the Hong Kong freedom fighters.

He participated in the Revolution of Dignity and later became a key figure in the "Who Killed Katya Handziuk?" movement, advocating for justice for anti-corruption activist Kateryna Handziuk.

Sergeant Pavlo Petrychenko served in the Yakiv Handziuk 59th Motorized Brigade. His last mission was in the region of Donetsk, near Avdiivka.

This is a profound loss for Ukrainian civil society and a lifelong sorrow for Pavlo’s friends and family.

You did an outstanding job, Pasha.

We will miss you dearly.

Rest in peace.

🇺🇦🏴 To mark the 4th anniversary of Hong Kong Way, our activists at the frontline and their sworn brothers wish to express solidarity with all Hongkongese freedom-seekers oppressed by the hostile regime of the Chinese Communist Party.

The latest persecution development in Hong Kong showed that the CCP regime fears any manifestation of Hong Kong's freedom while trying to silence even those who keep fighting from exile. But history teaches that an oppressor always fails.

We urge our Hongkongese family to stay united in the face of this essential challenge. As the Baltic Way (1989) and the Ukraine Wave (1990) united the free part of Europe to finish the communist occupation, Hong Kong and other like-minded nations will counter the same threat.

July 1st is an important date in Hong Kong's history.

From the wrongful Hong Kong handover and the so-called National Security Law implementation to the 2003 protest march and 2019 LegCo storm anniversaries.

Today, our frontliners wish all Hongkongers the freedom to determine the future. As Taras Shevchenko wrote in 1845, "Keep fighting - you are sure to win!".

Last but not least, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to our Hongkongese friends, who have kept supporting our struggle for freedom all the last 17 months of the war.

Ukraine will prevail. Hong Kong will revive. The autocracies will fail.

The Hong Kong National Anthem was presented at the 1st Protasiv Yar Festival of Roman Ratushnyi in Kyiv 🏴🇺🇦

Today is one year since we lost our brother, Roman Ratushnyi.

He sacrificed his life in the battle of Izium last year, safeguarding Ukraine and worldwide freedom from the Russian invasion.

We did not save a lot of his wise words in support of the Hong Kong freedom fight. However, we will always remember his passion to keep defending the value of liberty from any communist oppression.

Roman has stood for the freedom of Tibet since his childhood. In 2019, he called for a rally against the Chinese embassy in Ukraine to support the anti-extradition law movement. In 2021, it helped us a lot to organize 6.12 events in solidarity with all freedom-fighting Hongkongers. And a few weeks before his eternal rest, he did his best to build the bridge between Ukraine and Taiwan.

Roman has never been to Hong Kong, but he was a great ally of Hong Kong. And before going, he urged all of us to keep paying the dues in the name of freedom: in Ukraine, in Hong Kong, and worldwide.

In front of the 4th anniversary of the Hong Kong 2019 democracy movement, we do ask you to follow Roman's wisdom and never fear anything in the fight for freedom.

Ukraine will prevail.
Hong Kong will be liberated.

Wuer Kaixi led the first-ever event to commemorate heroes and victims of the Tiananmen in Kyiv on the 34th anniversary of the massacre!

Arthur Kharytonov, the main coordinator of the Free Hong Kong Center, was honored to moderate the panel discussion «Anniversary of the violent suppression of the Tiananmen Movement: Impact on Ukraine, then and now» in the Museum of the Revolution of Dignity.

Wuer Kaixi (dissident, one of the leaders of the 1989 student protests in China, Secretary General of the Taiwanese Parliamentary Commission on Human Rights), Oleksandra Matviichuk (head of the Center for Civil Liberties - Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2022), Volodymyr Viatrovych (MP, member of the Ukraine-Taiwan Inter-Fractional Parliamentary Association), and Ihor Poshyvailo (Director General of the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity) were presented as the speakers.

We do hope after the victory of Ukraine, the city of Kyiv will join the international capitals to host a full-scale kind of event to honor the Tiananmen people in the Hong Kong way.

«Anniversary of the violent suppression of demonstrations in Tiananmen Square: Impact on Ukraine, then and now»

Meeting with Wu`er Kaixi, dissident, one of the leaders of the 1989 student protests in China, Secretary General of the Taiwanese Parliamentary Commission on Human Rights.

with participation of Oleksandra Matviichuk, human rights activist, head of the Center for Civil Liberties, Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2022;

Volodymyr Viatrovych, People's Deputy, member of the Ukraine-Taiwan Inter-Fractional Parliamentary Association, one of the leaders of the Orange Revolution and Euromaidan protests in 2004 and 2013-2014;

Ihor Poshyvailo, Director General of the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity.

Moderator: Arthur Kharytonov (president of Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine, Free Hong Kong Center main coordinator, Ukraine+Taiwan forum coordinator)

On Sunday in Kyiv, we invite media representatives to a meeting and discussion with one of the founders and key student leaders of the Tiananmen Democracy Movement, which took place in 1989 in China. It is fair to say that the Chinese student movement inspired and led to the next wave of revolutions in the Soviet Union, and East Germany, and the Velvet Revolutions in Eastern Europe, ending the Cold War. Every year the world remembers this day.

Wu`er Kaixi came to Ukraine on a humanitarian mission as Secretary General of the Taiwanese Parliamentary Human Rights Commission. «My stay in Ukraine gives me a perfect opportunity to deliver a message to the world, in the special circumstances of your country, that when comes to freedom and dignity, we the oppressed and resistants must unite».

The event will take place on Sunday, June 4, 16:00 at the Information and Exhibition Center of the Maidan Museum (18/2 Independence Square, Trade Unions Building, 1st floor).

We invite representatives of the media and public sector to attend the event.

💥 Read the interview with our main coordinator Arthur Kharytonov for the Svidomi Media:

"I call what happened after the protests ended and the pandemic began a "hybrid occupation" of Hong Kong. China has violated all international agreements, the Hong Kong constitution and its obligations by introducing the so-called "national security law". This law destroyed freedom and democracy.

Within months, China launched a crackdown on democratic representatives, some in prison and others in exile in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Hong Kongers who came to Ukraine after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion said they were now studying the experience of the UPR in exile".

"Freedom is worth dying for; Ukrainians are able to express this fully"

***

Ng, whose hometown of Hong Kong also saw pitched battles between demonstrators and armed riot police in a mass protest against encroaching totalitarianism in 2019, said Ukrainians are also fairly united in their perception of what is at stake.

"They see this as a war between liberalism and totalitarianism," he said, adding that many in Ukraine have expressed solidarity with the democratic island of Taiwan, which China claims despite never having controlled the country, and has threatened to annex by force if it continues to refuse "peaceful unification" under Chinese Communist Party rule.

"Ukrainians aren't going to sit around waiting to die, either," he said. "I have learned from them what it means to live with dignity."

"It's worth dying for freedom, and Ukrainians are able to express this fully."

Dear friends and followers! 🏴🇺🇦

The Free Hong Kong Center team would like to express our most profound appreciation for all your support of Ukraine, and especially for your donations to the FHKC activists at the frontline.

Yevhen Cherepnia, one of our activists, a Ukrainian soldier, and an ally of all freedom-fighting Hongkongers, sends his kind regards from the hottest point of the planet, the city of Bakhmut (Donetsk region, Ukraine).

Furthermore, he is a member of the group within the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade "Kholodnyi Yar", who went to the front in the mid-Spring of 2022, after the battle of Kyiv.

Yevhen said he feels thankful and proud to be supported by the people of Hong Kong. And asked to share with you a message to every Hongkonger, who keeps fighting for freedom through the red darkness of oppression.

“Never stop fighting. Do not forgive your enemies. Always hold each other. And keep the oil warm inside till the moment when the flames became new fires to ignite thousands of hearts and lead the people to the best of times.”

The funds you sent us on Patreon went to support the frontline work of our activists, as well as to maintain their ammunition, humanitarian supplies, and mechanical issues (such as car repair).

From April 2022 till February 2023 we successfully received 6390$, equally shared among your frontliners on monthly bases.

Once again we are thanking every Hongkonger and friend of the FHKC of Ukraine!

We do hope our followers and patrons will keep standing with us till the final Ukrainian victory!

The major part of Ukraine is without electricity due to the latest massive Russian rocket attack. Over the month civilians are facing blackouts for 10-12 hours per day or more - just because of the Russian terrorist state existing.

However, even without the light we chose freedom.

FHKC’s main coordinator posted the picture of Sir Patten’s book about Hong Kong which is available now in Ukraine.

Freedom will prevail, as well as Hong Kong and Ukraine will.

Sad news.

Our Taiwanese brother, Jonathan Tseng, was killed in action in the Luhansk area, defending Ukraine from the Russian barbarians.

He just turned 25.

The brother of Ukraine served in the 49th separate rifle battalion "Karpatska Sich".

Eternal memory to the fallen Hero of Ukraine and Taiwan.

Our condolences to Jonathan's family, friends, and sworn brothers and sisters.

Glory to Taiwan!

We will take revenge!

Olexandra Matviychuk, the head of the Nobel Peace Prize 2022 awarded Ukrainian organization Center for Civil Liberties / Центр Громадянських Свобод, at the FHKC's rally against Chinese crimes in Hong Kong (Kyiv, 2019).

Olexandra is a prominent Ukrainian freedom-fighter, who was always standing for Hong Kong, Tibet, Taiwan, and East Turkestan.

Warm congratulations to her and the CCL team!

P.S. In the meanwhile we are sad that the Nobel committee inlined organizations from Russia and Belarus with powerful Ukraine's team of CCL. We do not want to share anything with the people from states, involved in the war in Ukraine. There is no place for whitewashing criminal societies!

The bonus fund of the Arno Esch Prize 2022 awarded to the FHKC mother organization is donated to the Armed Forces of Ukraine! 🔥

The Bureau of the Liberal Democratic League Ukraine, the mother organization of the Free Hong Kong Center, decided to transfer all the prize money (1200 euros) to the frontliners of the Mobile Anti-Tank Group of the 93rd Independent Kholodnyi Yar Mechanized Brigade.

The specified amount in hryvnia equivalent has already been transferred to the defenders of Ukraine.

Our brother and friend, the first LDLU honorary member, Roman Ratushnyi (24), who fell in battle, defended not only Ukraine but also the highest, global values of freedom and human dignity, fought as part of "Kholodnyi Yar" (“Cold Ravine”).

We believe that Roman's contribution to the Ukrainian democracy would have been highly appreciated by Arno Esch (23), who died fighting the Russian-Soviet terror machine in 1951.

And although it is a small amount, we are convinced that our decision relays a vital message. From generation to generation, heroic youth prove that freedom is not free.

In memory of our fallen friends and those who fought before them, we urge you to work every day together with us for the victory of Ukraine, to donate to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and to fully support its defenders. Until the last enemy of freedom disappears from the freedom-loving Ukrainian land!

Have a great hunt, Kholodnyi Yar brothers!

Note 1.

Arno Esch Prize - a prize awarded once every two years since 1990 by the Association of Liberal Academics, honoring the memory of Arno Esch - a 23-year-old law student from the University of Rostock, who was tortured by the Russian occupiers of Germany for fighting against communist evil.

In 2022 it was awarded to the Liberal Democratic League and its president, Arthur Kharytonov (https://bit.ly/3NE13lZ). In 2020 it was awarded to the Hong Kong students and Nathan Law.

The Ukrainian Voices (烏克蘭之聲): activists in Taiwan founded an educational media platform about Ukraine! 🇺🇦🇹🇼

A group of Ukrainian students and social science researchers in Taiwan founded a media platform 烏克蘭之聲 Ukrainian Voices, whose idea is to explain current events in Ukraine through the prism of historical and cultural contexts. Implemented in both Mandarin and English, this platform aims to inspire people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and beyond to better understand Ukraine with its complex history and turbulent present.

“We want to deconstruct the colonial narratives that still dominate foreigners' knowledge of Ukraine while showing how much the freedom-loving people of Ukraine and Taiwan have in common." - said the platform's founders.

The well-known local news channel CNA has written about Ukrainian Voices’ initiators, "After five months of the Russian-Ukrainian war, a group of young Ukrainians felt that the Taiwanese people did not know enough about their country, and decided to present a project about Ukraine in English and Chinese on Facebook and Instagram, hoping that the people of Taiwan would continue to follow Russia's aggression in Ukraine, and will also take a deeper interest in culture, history and the current situation in Ukraine."

You can follow Ukrainian Voices’ educational content on Facebook and Instagram and the team’s communications on Twitter.
