The director of a new film about Winehouse says "paparazzi and addiction" are the villains in the movie, not her ex-husband.

Sam Taylor-Johnson tells the BBC it "wasn't her place to cast judgement".

The film, Back to Black, follows Winehouse's journey from a confident north London teenager to international megastar.

Marisa Abela, who appeared in Barbie and BBC drama Industry, plays Winehouse. Skins and This Is England actor Jack O'Connell takes on the role of Fielder-Civil.

That last behaviour is why Fabian and Sondhi consider flood lights to be the worst light pollution offenders – the beams of light that fill a large area cause insects to flip upside down abruptly, leading to a lot of catastrophic crash landings. Only very few scattered voices, such as geologist Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin, were more prescient. He urged his contemporaries to practise self-restraint when it came to coal appetites, seeing this as necessary to safeguard a stable climate for future generations. But, despite sensing the gravity of the challenge, he also saw reason to hope people might rise to the task. Pointing out that, when cooperating at large-scale, humankind has so far only tended to disturb or destroy ecosystems, Chamberlin also hinted that we are the first and only animal to realise its impacts. What's more, when considering human history, people have only just begun grasping this and, thus, acting toward rectifying it.

Today's consensus concerning climate change and its consequences rests, in part, on the past's egregious mistakes. Getting closer to truth unavoidably involves being wrong before. Because of this, Abbott's case suggests that one shouldn't be hasty when it comes to acting drastically in what you think is the interest of future generations.

Common misconceptions can dampen the urgency to treat garbage patches. "The problem is that most people are not aware of the issue, therefore they don't feel motivated enough to be engaged in solutions," says Walter Leal, a professor of Environment and Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK.

Left unchecked, more trash will accumulate in garbage patches. "Indeed, they are growing bigger as we speak," says Leal. One 2021 paper predicts that the growth rate is 2.5% based on current trends – but the authors of the report warn that is a conservative estimate.

Since its discovery, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) has often been depicted in the media as a floating mass of plastic, and referred to as a trash island. However, contrary to popular belief, there is no surface on which to stand and it can't be seen from space.

"It wasn't a mountain of trash, or a field of trash, it wasn't even a patch of trash," says Moore. Instead, the ocean looked like a murky soup, made up of different sized plastics.

These beneficial effects of reindeer are in turn closely linked to the Sami and their traditional herding practices. "The Sami are caretakers of the ecosystem," says Jeffrey Welker, professor of Arctic ecology and biogeochemistry, at the University of Oulu and the University of Alaska in Anchorage. "The number of animals they put on a piece of land is quite moderate: numbers that the land can support. This moderation gives the ecosystem resilience," he says.

For the Sami herders, the animals' significance goes beyond providing a livelihood, and is intertwined with their very existence as a community. "Reindeer are very important to Sami people and Sami culture. If we don't have reindeer, we don't have Sami people," says Sanila-Aikio.

Those visitors have, in turn, started to seek out the region's cultural treasures, too. "The Khorezm desert fortresses and the Mizdarkhan necropolis here are amongst the most-impressive archaeological sites anywhere in Central Asia," said Sophie Ibbotson, co-author of the Bradt Guide to Karakalpakstan, the first-ever travel guide to the region. "Elsewhere, the Savitsky Museum in the capital Nukus is justifiably known as the 'Louvre of the Steppe'." (The museum contains the world's second-largest collection of Russian avant-garde art alongside Karakalpak archaeological and ethnographic galleries.) "For the intrepid traveller, this is a land of extraordinary variety, both in terms of landscapes and experiences."

These giant ground sloths, described in one paper as "a hamster the size of an elephant", were far removed from today's unhurried, tree-dwelling ones. They grew up to 4m long and walked on all fours, although research suggests some could stand and move bipedally. Almost 100 different species of sloths roamed the Americas between 15 million to 10,000 years ago alongside car-sized giant armadillos that also dug long tunnels through rocks in Brazil.

The timber companies weren't willing in 1968 either. They lobbied Congress to drop the park while cutting its ancient trees as fast as possible. A last-minute "legislative taking" amendment slipped into the bill by Senate staff was needed to immediately stop the logging. When companies are unwilling, that's what eminent domain is for. And while it's true that large industrial holdings are better for nature than a landscape of ranchettes with fences, driveways, and houses, it's also true that redwood companies already have real estate divisions with catchy names like getredwoodland.com selling off parcels.

Bohn's research on urban food production has inspired initiatives in places like Germany and Japan. Tokyo's Nerima ward, for example, has introduced urban food producing gardens very similar to Brighton's Albion Community Garden, while Berlin and Cologne have set up Food Policy Councils that take a clear cue from an organisation like the BHFP.

For my final dip into the city's sustainable food scene, I headed to a special pub. Opened in 2014, The Bevy is a community-owned watering hole in the city's Moulsecoomb neighbourhood funded by more than 800 locals who own shares in the pub, with prices starting at £10. While similar community pubs have sprung up across Britain, The Bevy remains the only one in the middle of a social housing estate.
