Adam, waar ben je?

Vanochtend is de bekende oud-theatermaker en orthodoxe kluizenaar Jozef Van den Berg in een klooster te Langadá bij Thessaloniki (GR) ontslapen in de Heer. Zelf vertelde hij dat God hem op 14 september 1989 raakte in de coulissen van deSingel in Antwerpen. Ter voorbereiding van een toneelstuk schreef hij "Waarom zie jij niet dat Ik niet komen kan, omdat Ik er al ben?" Dat trof Jozef Van den Berg zo hard dat hij onmiddellijk zijn theatercarrière stopzette en via de H. Sophrony in het klooster in Essex en de H. Porfyrios in Athene tot het orthodox-christelijke geloof kwam en na veel omzwervingen in een hutje in Neerijnen ging leven. Om gezondheidsredenen verbleef hij sinds een tijdje in het H. Transfiguratieklooster te Sochos (Langadá), waar hij dinsdag zal begraven worden.

The book of an Orthodox priest James K. Hamrick (St. John the Baptist Mission in Lewistown, MD, USA) “Orthodox Preaching as the Oral Icon of Christ ” is aimed at all modern priests, who experience the current crisis of preaching. Addressing people in the church is becoming more difficult, says father James. The younger - or postmodern- generation of Christians is skeptical of propositional truth claims but is “wired” for images and stories, that are broadcasted on smartphones everyday.

In his book father James shares his own practical knowledge of addressing an audience and elaborates on the theory of a sermon. For instance, he focuses on inductive (or narrative) sermons, which essentially ask a question and arrive at the answer toward the latter part of a speech (while in deductive preaching the answer e.g. declarative statement is given up front, and all supportive sentences are given afterwards).

Father James emphasises the timeless beauty and power of parabolic preaching of Jesus (for instance illustration of the great value of Heaven by comparing it to a pearl in the “Parable of the Pearl” or to a Mustard Seed in the “Parable of the Mustard Seed”).
Just as Orthodox icons are understood to be “windows into heaven,” so effective Orthodox preaching may be understood to transport the listener into the realm of the Holy Spirit.
