A doctor in San Diego has started using Macro mode on an iPhone 13 Pro to get a better look at the eyes of patients. The popular feature on the new iPhone Pro models doesn't require specialized hardware and is very straightforward to use, making it a fast and simple way of checking on a patient. All of which means patients shouldn't be too surprised if their next ophthalmologist visit involves an iPhone centimeters away from their face.

Macro mode is really quite neat. Without using specialized lenses - as would be the case with a DSLR - the iPhone can achieve incredible shots with a focus range of up to 2 centimeters away. While these shots are unobtainable with a regular focal length lens or camera, the iPhone 13 Pro's ultra-wide lens doubles as a software-enabled macro lens, since it has an f/1.8 aperture and a 120-degree field of view. The feature is typically used for capturing smaller objects, such as closeup shots of spiders or flowers. Essentially, if it's small, Macro mode can probably take a pretty good photo of it, adding one more tool to the iPhone 13 Pro for on-the-go photographers.

During the iPhone 13 launch, Apple announced Cinematic mode, an impressive video capability that works with all models. Apple spent quite a bit of time showing off this feature without really explaining how to use it. An interesting detail with Cinematic mode is that the special effect can be adjusted even after a video has been recorded. This takes the pressure off of getting the focus just right when recording.

Apple updated the iPhone 13 with a faster processor, a brighter screen, more advanced stabilization for the main camera, lenses, and image sensors that capture more light. No big changes were made but several hardware features received significant upgrades. An iPhone is more than simply hardware, though, and iOS 15 and Apple apps were enhanced with great new features as well.

It's no secret that Mars has a rocky and sandy surface, and this incredible photo from the NASA Perseverance rover is an excellent reminder of that point. Among all of the planets in our Solar System, Mars has a sense of wonder and fascination unlike any other. There are traces of oxygen in its atmosphere, many believe ancient life once existed on the planet, and there are even plans to put the first humans on Mars in the 2030s.

While there may not be humans on Mars for a few more years, robots have been exploring the planet since 1997. Today, one of the most recent and famous rovers is Perseverance. Perseverance landed on Mars in February 2021 with two ambitious goals: to collect Martian rock samples and search for signs of life. While traversing Mars, Perseverance also captures and shares thousands of pictures to showcase exactly what the planet looks like.
