During the past two days, border front-liners, including Police Officers and Immigration Officers, received comprehensive border-security training led by two Special Agents, Jeremy Clarke and Eric Whippy, from the US Embassy in Fiji.

The training sessions primarily emphasized the topics of Human and Drug Trafficking as well as Document Examination. The participating officers expressed their appreciation for the training, as it provided them with valuable insights and knowledge, even though they had previously undergone similar programs.

As part of the training, participants were equipped with Magnifiers and Detect Lights, which will enable them to identify fraudulent passports and promptly detect potential criminals upon their entry into Tuvalu's borders.

The participants were awarded Certificates at the end of the two-day training.

For many years, Tuvaluans have been making use of and enjoying the services provided by the copper network offered by Tuvalu Telecommunications Corporation (TTC). This network has been instrumental in allowing individuals to access landlines and ADSL internet services from their homes and workplaces. Nonetheless, TTC has encountered difficulties in sustaining the network due to the detrimental impacts of rising sea levels, as the network cables are situated underground."

Fortunately, TTC is now in a favourable position to upgrade to a more advanced and reliable Fiber to the Premises (FTTP). This transition is made possible through the financial support from the World Bank.

According to Ms. Tenanoia Simona, the General Manager of TTC, the deployment of a FTTP network will utilize the existing conduits of the copper line infrastructure to connect all major institutions and business, as well as many residential users, to a very high capacity FTTP network. The project is targeted to complete around the first quarter of 2024 which is subject to shipments.

Ms. Simona emphasizes the significance of informing the public about the forthcoming roadwork that may involve potential roadblocks. Consequently, TTC is kindly requesting the cooperation of the public to ensure the seamless progress and successful completion of the project. If anyone has inquiries or requires additional clarification, please contact TTC’s toll-free number 555.

During the UNFCCC COP 26 in 2021, Tuvalu made a plea for international cooperation in safeguarding our oceans, recognizing its vital role in both economic growth and everyday sustenance for Tuvaluans.

Responding to this shared concern for ocean preservation, the Republic of Korea pledged its commitment to partnering with Tuvalu, standing in solidarity to protect and preserve the oceans for present and future generations.

To formalize this commitment, a delegation from the Republic of Korea recently visited Tuvalu and launched the '2023 Tuvalu Fishing Village Green ODA Project', a significant undertaking valued at $5m.

This project covers the construction of essential infrastructure within the Fishing village, including community facilities and small-scale wharf facilities. Additionally, solar panels will be installed in the three main fishing areas, generating 112,000 KW of clean energy per year.

Honorable Myeong-dal Song, Deputy Minister of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea expressed optimism that this project will not only enhance the livelihoods of Tuvalu's communities but also contribute to the revitalization and sustainable development of the nation's fisheries sector, further cementing and strengthening the cooperation between both countries.

Honorable Ampelosa Tehulu, Acting Prime Minister of Tuvalu, extended heartfelt gratitude to the Republic of Korea for the generous and kind assistance. He particularly highlighted the significance of their solidarity commitment, believing it will bring enduring economic benefits to the people of Tuvalu.

The Republic of China Taiwan provides Tuvalu with an annual grant consisting of two installments: one at the beginning of the year and the other towards the end of the year. This grant has recently been increased from US$7m to US$12m, which is equivalent to AUD$18.1m.

The 13th Pacific Community SPC Conference recently concluded in Noumea, New Caledonia, with a focus on addressing the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels in the Pacific region. The conference emphasized the importance of utilizing technology in building resilience within the Pacific community, as highlighted by the theme ‘Nexus of Climate Change and Digital Transformation'.

A significant topic discussed during the conference was the Digital Nation Initiative, which is being spearheaded by Tuvalu and led by Special Envoy and Former Minister of Justice, Communications and Foreign Affairs, Honorable Simon Kofe. Honorable Kofe showcased the Digital Nation Initiative (3D Model) to delegates and received support from partners for this initiative.

The Special Envoy highlighted that the Pacific Community (SPC) is proposing an initiative to create a model of all the islands of Tuvalu. This model would provide accurate data and information on the impact of sea level rise and climate change on the islands, enabling leaders to make informed decisions.

Tuvalu is pleased with the outcomes of the 13th Pacific Community Conference and looks forward to collaborating closely with partners to safeguard Tuvalu's statehood.

Tuvalu is a country that highly values its cultural heritage. Unfortunately, due to limitations and unpreparedness, the 13th Conference of the Pacific Community had to be relocated from Tuvalu to Noumea, New Caledonia. However, the government ensured that Tuvalu's culture was still well represented by sending a youth delegation to present at the Conference, where Tuvalu holds the chairmanship.

During the conference's opening today, delegates from other countries were warmly welcomed and immersed in Tuvalu's culture. They were greeted with traditional garlands, presented with locally made handicrafts, and treated to local dance performances.

Siatunu Limau and Maeli Ioane, two members of the youth delegation, expressed their joy and gratitude for the opportunity to showcase Tuvalu's culture in a foreign setting. They encouraged the younger generation of Tuvalu to continue sharing their culture wherever they go.

The Foreign Minister, Honorable Panapasi Nelesone, expressed his appreciation to the youth delegation for creating an atmosphere that made everyone feel at home during the conference.

The conference began today and will conclude tomorrow.

The Foreign Minister of Tuvalu, Honorable Panapasi Nelesone, is currently in attendance at the 13th Conference of the Pacific Community in Noumea, New Caledonia.

The conference's theme this year, "Nexus of Climate Change and Digital Transformation," holds significant importance for our region due to our vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events, stated Honorable Nelesone during his opening remarks as Chair of the conference.

Honorable Nelesone is pleased that leaders have gathered once again in Noumea to discuss and address the urgent challenges and opportunities that shape the Pacific's collective future.

Tuvalu is taking a leading role in the area of Digital Transformation, offering a valuable opportunity for the country to showcase its efforts in areas such as a Digital Nation, Metaverse, and other models that are part of the Future Now Project, led by Special Envoy Simon Kofe.

Tuvalu eagerly anticipates the opportunity to learn from other Pacific leaders as they engage in further discussions during this conference.

Residents in certain areas of Funafuti have been experiencing a power outage since 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. The lack of electricity has persisted for a duration of seven hours thus far. According to Taaku Sekielu, the Acting General Manager of the Tuvalu Electricity Corporation (TEC), the cause of the disruption was an over-current fault from a transformer located at a sub-station in Kavatoetoe.

To fix the situation, personnel from the Public Works Department have been assisting TEC workers in the removal of the faulty transformer at the aforementioned sub-station.

A new transformer has been installed successfully and presently, efforts are being made to ensure that the insulators of the newly installed transformers are adequately prepared prior to reestablishing connectivity.

It is anticipated that electricity will be restored to residents residing between Teone and Kavatoetoe sometime after midnight tonight.

Digital TV comes to Tuvalu

It’s taken 8 months of work with the joint efforts of TVBC and MMG along with the efforts of management and staff of Click Pacific Papua New Guinea to get local TV finally commissioned in Tuvalu. The DVBT2 platform is the latest digital terrestrial technology and now places Tuvalu alongside Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, Niue and Papua New Guinea as DVBT2 territories. “We are very happy for the people of Tuvalu. It’s 11 channels of TV they never had and should bring about a lot of change especially with the local channel” MMG’s Richard Broadbridge said. We have a team of 3 on the ground and as of today 50 customers have been installed in 4 days. These are 50 households which never had TV. We salute the amazing effort of TVBC management and staff along with Telecom Tuvalu and the Public Works Department. Everyone is working towards selling all Tuvalu.TV’s stock before the Prime Minister officially launches the platform on December 17. Tuvalu.TV is MMG’s third Digital TV platform install in the Pacific Islands.
