05/03/2021

Trinidad and Tobago cricketer Kieron Pollard has firmly established himself as one of the greatest performers in the shorter forms of the game after his spectacular record-equalling display of power-hitting on Wednesday in Antigua & Barbuda.

The 33-year-old all-rounder joined South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs and Yuvraj Singh of India as the only batsmen to crash six sixes in one over in the limited-overs format as he led West Indies to a four-wicket victory, with 41 balls to spare after losing six wickets, over Sri Lanka in the first CG T20 International at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.

Fresh from captaining the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to victory in an unprecedented unbeaten seven-match run which concluded with a 152 run win over Guyana Jaguars in the Cricket West Indies CG Super50 Cup on Saturday at the same venue, Pollard lofted spinner Akilaq Dananjaya over the ropes six consecutive times in the sixth over of the innings.

In his previous over, the Sri Lankan had snapped up a hat-trick (three wickets in three consecutive balls to remove removed Lewis, Chris Gayle (0) and Nicholas Pooran (0) to put West Indies in a spot of trouble chasing 132 to win.

On Thursday, president of the T&T Cricket Board Azim Bassarath said that Pollard's feat defied description and underlined his ability to rise to the occasion which makes him a truly inspirational leader.

“We have now become accustomed to these exhilarating performances in all facets of the game from the West Indies white-ball captain, while batting in crucial stages of the game, bowling at the death, or executing gravity-defying catches in the outfield,” said Bassarath.

The T&TCB boss said that his exceptional exploits have made him a standout in championship-winning teams like the Red Force, the West Indies, and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Incidentally, all three, Pollard, Gibbs and Yuvraj are Mumbai Indians players.

“Now he's the only the second cricketer after Yuvraj to smash six maximums in T20 Internationals. It is also the second exhibition of power-hitting recorded in the Caribbean following Gibbs' feat in a 2007 World Cup 50-Over match in St Kitts & Nevis against the Netherlands,” said Bassarath.

West Indies legend Sir Garry Sobers was the first to set the standard for six-hitting when he played for Nottinghamshire in English County Cricket against Glamorgan in Swansea, Wales on August 31, 1968.

Bassarath said that Pollard seems to be getting better with age, proving to be a winner at the forefront of three winning teams in the past six months with the Mumbai in the 2020 IPL in the United Arab Emirates, the Red Force in the 2020 CPL in Trinidad and Tobago, and the recent CG Regional Super50 Cup in Antigua & Barbuda.

Bassarath said that Pollard will be greatly missed as he won't be available to skipper the Red Force in the CWI Regional 4-Day Tournament as he will be on franchise club duty with Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

“The TTCB congratulates our captain on his record-equaling performance which has made T&T proud and warmed the hearts of his fans all over the world. Polly is an exceptional ambassador for our country who has deservedly etched his name in the history of cricket,” Bassarath.

The TTCB boss extended his best wishes to Pollard and the entire West Indies team for the two remaining T20 matches, and the three ODIs to follow against the Sri Lankans.

Meanwhile, Cricket West Indies (CWI) President, Ricky Skerritt, has congratulated Trinidad and Tobago Red Force on their outstanding performance, to win the CG Insurance Super50 Cup at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.

The Red Force had a dominant victory in last Saturday’s final, by 152 runs over the Guyana Jaguars, and a perfect record in winning all seven matches. Skipper Kieron Pollard had the cherished honour of lifting the Sir Clive Lloyd trophy.

Skerritt sent short messages of congratulations to President Bassarath and Pollard following the Final.

In commenting on the overall tournament Skerritt said:

“This was a remarkable show of force by Trinidad and Tobago from start to finish. It was a total team effort and Red Force found a match-winner at every stage. The other five franchise teams, including losing finalist Guyana Jaguars, all worked hard and showed good fighting qualities to varying degrees. But The Red Force was more dominant and consistent than ever, and simply unstoppable.”

In a direct note to the Bassarath, Skerritt said,

“Congrats on a great tournament and Final victory for TTCB and your team. This incredible performance should emphasize the vital importance of planning and preparation. I hope it has also reminded us why cricket administrators should not simply throw away senior players while these players still have such good value to their team and country. Successful cricket teams employ a healthy balance of youth and experience, just like your team did in winning this tournament.”

President Skerritt also thanked the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, local health and medical officials, the tournament officials and operators from the Antigua & Barbuda Cricket Association, The Leewards Board, and CWI who worked diligently to make the CG Insurance Super-50 event such a huge success

A COURT has ordered a Laventille man to hold up an “I will not litter” sign after he pleaded guilty to the offence before a magistrate.

The accused, Jason Williams, 45, of Picton Road, Laventille, appeared before Port of Spain Magistrate Indar Jagroo on Tuesday after being arrested the day before and charged with littering, disorderly behaviour, obscene language, making threats to a police officer, and failing to give his fingerprints.

The court heard that around 5.30 p.m. on Monday, PC Diaz, of the Port of Spain Municipal Police, was on patrol along Independence Square, near Club Princess Casino, when he saw the suspect drinking a bottle of water.

The officer then observed the man throwing the bottle to the pavement, causing the remainder of its contents to splatter.

PC Diaz approached the man, told him about what he saw, following which he and other officers attempted to arrest him to take him to City Police Headquarters at City Hall.

On their way, the man allegedly threatened the officers and cursed them.

PC Diaz cautioned the man and informed him of the offence of using obscene language in a public place for which he can be charged.

However, the man continued to use obscene language.

Upon arriving at City Police Headquarters, the man allegedly cursed the officers even more while resisting attempts to have his fingerprints taken.

During his court appearance, Williams pleaded guilty to littering, but denied the other offences.

After being ordered to hold the “I will not litter sign” in front of City Police Headquarters, he was granted $50,000 bail for the other offences against him.

He was ordered to reappear in court on March 31.

Nurse ordered to hand over $2.3m house
DECEASED DOCTOR DID NOT INCLUDE HER IN HIS WILL...
A NURSING assistant has been ordered to hand over the $2.3 million house she shared with a doctor who passed away in 2015, to his ex-wife and son.
In making his order virtually on Wednesday, Justice Frank Seepersad said that Dr Ram Singh had not, in his will, left Olivia Springer the five-bedroom house she claimed they renovated together.
He also said there was no evidence she was entitled to the house or a Toyota Corolla purchased in 2012.
Seepersad said while there was a relationship between the two, Singh did not want to live with her. The judge said the way he treated Springer was unacceptable and reflective of his dismissive attitude toward women.
He said the doctor used and had a good time with the woman. He added that women were not to be treated as “playthings” or the property of men. The judge said he hoped Singh’s sons will not continue their father’s behaviour.
Ram Singh, 60, died from a heart attack in 2015.
In documents filed last October, Springer, 32, detailed her relationship with Singh, whom she said she met in mid-2011 while she was a nursing student.
She explained that their relationship quickly turned from friendly to romantic and, that same year, they moved into a rented one-bedroom apartment.
In 2012, Springer said they decided to purchase a home they could share and start a family.
They found a five-bedroom property with a swimming pool in Arima, and a sale agreement was done in December 2012. The couple, who yearly vacationed in Magarita, Venezuela, also purchased a car in 2012.
Springer said the house was in need of renovations and they both “put everything” into it. She said she had receipts for the $76,155.47 she spent in repairs and she also bought $58,485.46 in furniture and paid the bills at the house. Springer said she also maintained the car and paid the insurance premium.
Springer, in her affidavit, said she and the doctor were in a relationship for four and a half years and, based on the manner they conducted their affairs, she knew Singh intended that she would have her rightful share in their home and keep the car for her use.
Ram Singh’s son, Keiron Singh, acting on behalf of his mother, Takawati Christine Balroop, whom the doctor divorced in 2004, brought action against Springer.
He said, in court documents, that his father hired Springer as a nursing assistant and Springer’s mother as a domestic helper, allowing them to have access to the house.
The younger Singh said following his father’s death, Springer was warned of legal proceedings for trespass and possession.
Kieron Singh stated that in 2016, Springer sought a declaration from the court that a co-habitual relationship existed between her and Ram Singh, but this application, defended by the claimant, was dismissed.
In giving his decision, Seepersad said the doctor and Springer were in a relationship, but that he put her in an unrealistic expectation as it concerned possession of the house and car. He also did not accept that she assisted in buying the multi-million-dollar home or contributed to the $15,000 monthly mortgage or the furnishings with her $7,000 salary.
Following a virtual trial, Seepersad ordered that Springer hand over the house to the claimant. In the oral ruling, Springer was ordered to vacate the house by April 30 and pay the legal cost for the proceedings.
Springer had filed documents seeking to have the property sold and the proceeds shared between herself and Singh’s family, but this was dismissed by the judge.
The claimant was, at Wednesday’s virtual hearing, represented by attorney Haresh Ramnath. He said the family should be willing to allow Springer to keep the furniture she said she bought for the house and the car.
Seepersad said Springer was young enough to learn from the experience and move on.

MA*****NA ACTIVIST — NAZMA MULLER FINED $6000 FOR CULTIVATION, POSSESSION
REPORT BY NEWSDAY:
MA*****NA ACTIVIST Nazma Muller has been fined $6,000 for possession of more than 400 grammes of ma*****na and cultivation of the dangerous drug.
Arima magistrate Brambhanan Dubay fined Muller at a virtual hearing on Thursday. She pleaded guilty to the two charges.
She was arrested on September 9, last year, when Northern Division police said they got information that led them to her home at Second Street East, Trincity.
There they found ma*****na plants, nurseries, and 435 grammes of dried and cured ma*****na.
She was represented by attorney Daniel Khan.
In his plea of mitigation, Khan said Muller did not commit the offences for financial gain. He also said she did not resist when police came to her home to execute a warrant, and had shown them what she had in her possession. She also allegedly told them she had “these to give away” for her birthday the next day, and said she smoked ma*****na because of her religious beliefs.
Khan said when the Dangerous Drugs Act was amended, it created a lacuna, since it has only been partially passed and the legislation was still being developed. The Cannabis Control Bill, which will permit cultivation, import and export of the drug, among other measures, is still to be taken to Parliament. It will also create a licensing regime.
Khan said Muller found herself in the “shifting period,” since what she pleaded guilty to, in the future, will no longer be an offence.
“Sometime in the future, my client will be allowed to have 400 grammes and more than four plants and seedlings, granted she satisfies certain regulations.”
But, he admitted that it did not take away from the fact that she had broken the current laws. He also added that in her view, the law was oppressive, but she had accepted her guilt and was willing to face the court’s punishment and not waste time by challenging the legality of the charges against her.
It was also submitted that Muller is an academic editor who previously worked at the UWI Mona Campus, Jamaica, and is a former journalist. He said she was now an advocate for ma*****na use and small ma*****na farmers.
Khan said it is his client’s hope to return to Jamaica, where she lived and studied, to use her “experience and expertise,” but to return to TT when ma*****na laws are changed here.
In response, the police prosecutor said the law was the law, and Muller, as an activist, was aware that ma*****na had not been legalised but decriminalised.
“She knows what you can have and what you cannot have, and we cannot have people breaking the law because they think it is oppressive. A citizen must obey the law.”
Dubay imposed a fine of $3,000 for possession of ma*****na and gave her six months to pay, and another $3,000 for cultivation with the same time to pay.
He reminded that Muller pleaded guilty to being in possession of 435 grammes, which was substantially higher than the 30 grammes or less allowed by law.
Muller spent 16 days in prison before she was released on September 25, after her bail was paid. She had been granted bail of $300,000 or $15,000 cash bail when she first appeared in court to answer the charges.
Activist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh and others started a GoFundMe account to raise the needed money for her bail after her arrest.
In December 2019, amendments to the Dangerous Drugs Act made it legal for people to have no more than 30 grammes of ma*****na, but anyone caught with more than 100 grammes can be charged with trafficking and could be fined up to $3 million if convicted.
In 2019, Muller appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate after being charged with using obscene language in a public space to the annoyance of others, while advocating for the legalisation of the herb.
Muller has called for the issuance of licences for cultivation, import, export and sale of ma*****na.

Man charged with obtaining 32 phones with fake cheque
The Southern Division Fraud Squad arrested and charged one man for obtaining goods by false pretences.
KERN ANDREWS, 35, of Tarouba, appeared virtually before San Fernando Magistrate, Rajendra Rambachan and was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 to be approved by the Registrar of the Court or a cash alternative of $30,000. The charges were laid after ANDREWS allegedly acquired 32 mobile phones using an illegitimate bank manager’s cheque.
According to reports, contact was made with the mobile phone dealers on Friday 8th January, 2021, by someone purporting to be from the Presbyterian Church Board. The quantity of cell phones was requested and delivery scheduled for the following day. ANDREWS allegedly met with the delivery personnel from the company and presented a manger’s cheque valued at $54,420 from a reputable banking institution.
The cheque was accepted and the phones handed over, however, when the cheque was deposited to the company’s account, it was found to be fraudulent.
ANDREWS, a taxi driver, was charged on Friday 26th February after investigations led by Sgt Seepersad, including Cpl. (Ag.) Lewis and other officers of the Fraud Squad South Office along with PC Ramlal of the Marabella Police Station.
ANDREWS is expected to reappear before the court on March 29th 2021.
