Trinidadians Convicted in St. Vincent on Drug Charges Quarrel for Food After Court Appearance

Four Trinidadians, ordered by a St. Vincent court to pay a fine of EC$25,000 on ma*****na charges, fretted over food as they were transported to prison on Friday, October 25, 2024. The 240 lbs of ma*****na they harvested after eight months in St. Vincent will be destroyed.

The men—Damian Baptiste aka Tall Boy, 29; Shaqkeim Bolah aka Ming, 21; Isaiah Phillips aka Izzy, 23; and Jayron Abraham aka Fat Boy, 21—came to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to learn how to plant ma*****na. They were each ordered on Thursday to pay a fine of EC$25,000 or spend a year in prison.

Senior Magistrate Colin John ordered the men to pay the fines forthwith. They were initially arraigned at the Serious Offences Court on October 7 on charges of possessing the drug with intent to supply it to another at Petit Bo**el on October 3, the same day they allegedly had it in their possession for the purpose of drug trafficking. They each pleaded “guilty with an explanation” to the charges during their arraignment at the Serious Offences Court on October 7.

Vincentian Tevin Matthews, of Petit Bo**el, who was jointly charged with them for conspiring to traffic the drug between February 1 and May 4 at Petit Bo**el, pleaded not guilty. Matthews was granted bail, while the Trinidadians were remanded in custody. The matter was disposed of on Thursday after several adjournments.

In mitigation, defence counsel Grant Connell said the men were all farmers with no previous convictions. He added that they were extremely remorseful for their actions and had met a Vincentian young man on Facebook who invited them to learn how to plant ma*****na. They caught a boat because they could not afford the flight. They stayed until the crop was over to fulfill the purpose they came for.

After considering the aggravating and mitigating factors of the case, the magistrate arrived at a fine of EC$40,500.

The UK courts have thrown out a private criminal case brought by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) against one of its former managers, Dillian Johnson.
Johnson, known for his claims of ties to Chief Justice Ivor Archie, has been living in the UK under humanitarian protection since 2019. He was charged via summons for offences under the Communications Act 2003 in Wales for posts made between 2022 and 2023 about an ex-employee and another worker at WASA. In June, WASA chairman Ravindra Nanga said the authority had spent $300,000 to pursue the matter, hiring UK law firm JMW Solicitors LLP, who issued a summons to Johnson on June 25.
Johnson, who had previously pleaded “no plea” to the charges, was facing a prison sentence of up to 12 months, a fine, or both, under the malicious communications act 1988. If found guilty of an offence under the Comm
