This national public holiday — Indian Arrival Day (30 May) — commemorates the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India on the Fatel Rozack in 1845, following the Emancipation of enslaved Africans in 1838. Waves of indentured immigrants arrived at Nelson Island, off the coast of Chaguaramas, before being sent to various estates where the living conditions were often deplorable. Nearly 145,000 Indians were recruited over the next 70 years to work Trinidad’s plantations. Their arrival completely changed the island’s demographics, and its economic and sociopolitical landscape. It is consequently one of the most significant events in the islands’ history. 🇹🇹

Perhaps the most unique of all Tobagonian traditions is the Goat and Crab Races. At Easter time, only Friday and Monday are official holidays, but Easter Tuesday is not really a day for work in Tobago: people head to Buccoo in droves for the Family Day and Goat & Crab Races. In fact, the Festival is so nice it’s done twice: first at Easter, and then again for the Heritage Festival mid-year.

Many miracles have been attributed to her by ardent devotees. For her feast day (the third Sunday after Easter), the “Miracle Mother” is decorated by Catholics with flowers, dressed in white, and processed through the streets, followed by celebrations open to all. On the Thursday night (Holy or Maundy Thursday) and Good Friday before Easter, Hindu pilgrims visit the church with acts of devotion to the “Madonna Murti” — offerings of oil, rice, jewellery, rice, flowers, and the giving of alms to the needy — and recognising her most of all as “mother”. Dr Noor Kumar Mahabir has observed that in recent times, a Kali-Mai Hindu poojari has occupied the church grounds, who collects donations from worshippers to perform jharying, or protecting the celebrant from illness or calamity.

And it begins! 🐢 From March to September (and sometimes outside of these months), five different turtle species nest on Trinidad and Tobago’s beaches. During these months, Trinidad takes on a very important role — the second largest leatherback turtle nesting site in the world is at Grande Rivière. Do you agree? 😅 The New York Times says: "Macaroni pie is a firmer, highly spiced version of mac and cheese. Quintessential Trinidadian seasonings like thyme and Scotch bonnet pepper give this dish a distinctive taste, while a little less liquid mixed with an egg creates a solid, sliceable texture. A Trini staple for large family gatherings, it’s the perfect addition to a holiday table. And if there are any leftovers, they keep well. Feel free to use your favorite Cheddar, but if you’re able to find New Zealand Cheddar (or “Trinidad cheese” as it’s called on the island), don’t pass it up." 🇹🇹🇺🇸

Our story

Published every year since 1991, Discover Trinidad & Tobago is the country’s major international promotional book: a travel guide aimed both at international visitors planning a trip to the islands — whether for an eco adventure, business trip, or beach holiday — and at local Trinidadians and Tobagonians looking to know and explore more about their native islands, or planning a "staycation".

The magazine's experienced team of writers, editors, designers, and photographers comes from varied backgrounds and perspectives: some born and raised in Tobago or Trinidad, others who have come from across the globe and fallen in love with these islands and people.

MEP marked the 25th anniversary of Discover Trinidad & Tobago in 2016 with its 27th issue, which also marked the introduction of its first dual-cover design. The 2018 issue is the magazine’s 30th, and fourth straight dual-cover edition, where each island has its own distinct cover, and its own distinct content and design.

Discover is published each November, usually making its debut at the World Travel Market in London (UK) as part of the Trinidad & Tobago contingent. It is distributed free to local and international industry stakeholders; via a mobile app; and is also reproduced in full on the high-traffic discovertnt.com website, and on MEP’s Yumpu, Magzter, and Issuu accounts.
