SUSPECT DETAINED IN THE MURDER OF SHAKEM CHARLES.

Authorities said one man is in custody for the murder of 32-year-old rideshare driver Shakem Charles.

According to police reports, the suspect was held around 6pm on Sunday evening during a police operation by officers of the Southern Division as well as the Homicide Bureau in Penal.

Police said he is expected to be questioned this week, following which investigators will seek advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for instructions on what charges if any they would levy against him.

Charles, a father of two, reportedly worked with an audio-visual installation company in Port of Spain and had recently taken a second job as a rideshare driver to help pay for the loan installments on his recently purchased vehicle.

Charles, from Moruga Road in Indian Walk, Moruga, was last seen in Port of Spain around midday on July 10.

Charles had left Port of Spain and had told relatives that he would be returning home soon - however, that was the last time they heard from him.

All calls to his phone also went unanswered.

Relatives also told police that they became further concerned when checks were made to a joint account, and a sum of cash had been withdrawn from an ATM machine in San Fernando that night.

They became further alarmed when Charles' vehicle - a Toyota Cross - was found abandoned in Valencia on Wednesday morning.

The vehicle was taken to the Special Evidence Recovery Unit in Cumuto for forensic examination.

On July 13, his body was found in bushes off Sunrees Branch Road, Penal,

DNA testing was done to confirm its identity.

🇹🇹 Keshorn into Olympic Games Javelin finals! ✅

T&T’s four-time (x4) Olympian, Keshorn Walcott, qualified for the Men’s Javelin finals earlier this morning! 🙌🏽

Keshorn threw his javelin a distance of 83.02m in his ‘Group A’ qualification heat, however, he had to wait until both heats were completed to secure confirmation into the final 12 💪🏽

The ‘top three’ athletes from each heat attained automatic qualification and the following ‘top 6’ distances amongst the remaining athletes also advanced into the finals 📋

Germany’s Julian Webber won the Group A heat with his throw of 87.76m while India’s Neeraj Chopra was the top contender in the heats with his effort of 89.34m ☑️

T&T's (x2) Olympic medalist, Walcott, will be looking to make his impact when the Men’s Javelin showdown takes place on Thursday (8th August) from 2:25pm (🇹🇹🕒)
