China's rebar production decreased in the first half of 2024
According to data from China's National Bureau of Statistics, China's rebar production in the first half of 2024 decreased by 11.7% on an annual basis to 102.4 million tons. This decrease marks a significant decline in the rebar sector, which constitutes 14.6% of the country's total finished steel product production.
On June, China's rebar production was recorded as 18.2 million tons, with a decrease of 10.1% on an annual basis. However, an increase of 1.4% was observed compared to May.

Taiwan-based CHSC decided to maintain prices for August

Chung Hung Steel Corporation (CHSC), a Taiwan-based subsidiary of China Steel Corporation (CSC), has decided to maintain its domestic prices for hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and galvanized steel for August. Export prices for September deliveries will be adjusted according to regional market conditions.

Meanwhile, Chinese steel mills are reducing production. Data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) indicates a 4.35% decrease in daily crude steel output by major producers in early July compared to June. The Chinese government's initiatives on energy conservation, carbon reduction, and steel production control are expected to further restrict steel supply in the latter half of the year. The outcomes from China's Central Committee's Third Plenary Session might also affect economic development and potentially increase steel demand if domestic consumption policies are maintained.

The Chinese section steel market followed a volatile course in the first half of the year
At the beginning of 2024, the section steel market faced a weak demand environment. Especially in January and February, a downward trend in the market became evident due to off-season demand and tight financial restrictions. During this period, steel mills completed maintenance work early, which created pressure on the supply side. The decline in raw material prices also pulled down prices.

Russia's coal supplies to India decline, but increase to China
During March-May 2024, India reduced its coal imports from Russia by 22.4% to 6.76 million tonnes. High prices, lack of discounts and anti-Russian sanctions were cited as the main reasons for the decline in thermal coal purchases. In the same period, Russia increased its lignite coal shipments to China to over $53 million, the highest level since September 2022.

EU will update safeguard measures for HRC and wire rod, and extend them until 2026
The European Union (EU) announced to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it will extend its steel safeguard measures until 30 June 2026. Chinese H-beam imports threaten Vietnam's steel industry
Domestic H-beam steel demand in Vietnam decreased significantly, falling from 275,000 tons in 2022 to 271,000 tons in 2023. This decline is due to many internal and external factors, such as the continuous decline in international prices, strong fluctuations in the USD and the weakening of the real estate and domestic construction sector in the sector.

Iron ore prices in China recover thanks to improvements in the property sector
Iron ore futures improved thanks to back-to-back incentives from China's property sector.
Positive developments in China's property sector continue to come one after another. Chinese local governments' announcements that they will sell unsold houses encourage commercial home purchases.
In addition, the Beijing government removed the floor on mortgage rates as its most valid move so far and encouraged local governments to buy houses and turn them into affordable housing.
The speech by Vice Premier He Lifeng, in which comprehensive incentive packages were announced, did not specify a specific timeframe or pricing for purchases.
