The Gunnar Jarring Digital Library

The Gunnar Jarring Digital Library Research in a broad Eurasian perspective with digitization of materials from the private library of

The core of the physical Gunnar Jarring Central Eurasia Collection consists of around 5000 volumes – mostly printed books from the 19th and 20th centuries but also manuscripts, catalogues and maps – once part of the private library of late Ambassador Gunnar Jarring (1907–2002). More than 3000 off prints, most of them with dedication inscriptions, are included in the present collection. In 2012, th

ese precious works were donated by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities to the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, where they now constitute a crucial part of the research environment at this Institute. Besides travelogues and related literature, linguistic treatises and dictionaries for a great number of languages can be found in the collection, together with books on history, religion, literature and several other disciplines. Many pieces were gifts to the Ambassador from a broad circle of colleagues, friends and admirers. New gifts are continuously being received from scholars who feel honored to make a donation in memory of Gunnar Jarring. The Gunnar Jarring Digital Library is part of a digitization project with initial funding from the Swedish foundation Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (2011–2014). This project is conducted in cooperation with the Sven Hedin Foundation at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and at a global level with the International Dunhuang Project (IDP) – a network for the coordination of databases for collections from the Eastern Silk Road. Rare and fragile manuscripts and printed matters as well as other objects, such as photos, maps and drawings in the Jarring Collection at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII) have been digitized for storage and presented on the website http://www.jarringcollection.se/.

At the Swedish Embassy, New Delhi

GUNNAR JARRING IN INDIA AND KASHMIR
“The present compound of the Swedish Embassy was chosen by Gunnar Jarring in September 1951, as he was about to leave his position as Sweden’s first envoy in newly independent India. [… …] A few years later, in 1957, he was back as UN mediator in the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir – a region that Jarring knew well after linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork in Srinagar in 1935. Ambassador Jarring is probably one of the very few who have been engaged in Kashmir and its history both scientifically and at a political top level.” [From my “7th Whabiz Memorial Lecture” on 4 April, 2019; abstract: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p88nkns6a6po2r0/Abstract.Jarring.India.pdf?dl=0]

GRASSROOTS PHILOLOGY FOR A TOP DIPLOMAT –
a lecture by Prof. Birgit Schlyter, Stockholm, on the life and career of Gunnar Jarring (1907-2002), delivered on 4 April, 2019, at Nordic Centre in India, New Delhi, as

”The 7th Whabiz Merchant Memorial Lecture”

From the lecture:
“As a diplomat, Gunnar Jarring climbed to the top. As a scholar, he remained at the grassroots. [... ...]
Scientifically, Jarring was a conservative philologist, faithful to what he had learnt and developed as a graduate student at the University of Lund in the 1930s. On the other hand, in his attitude and approach to language and, more generally speaking, to research in the humanities, he was in many respects ahead of his time. Thus, the scholar we have before us is an analytically conservative philologist but a methodologically pioneering language researcher.”

Here is Birgit Schlyter when she finally gets her hands on one of our major discoveries, the handwritten Eastern Turki dictionary by the missionary and turkologist Gustaf Raquette (1871-1945), at Lund University Library!

Gustaf Raquette who was Gunnar Jarring’s mentor and supervisor at Lund University conducted linguistic fieldwork while working as a missionary in Kashgar. This manuscript has been a great discovery in the final stages of editing the 2nd edition of Gunnar Jarring’s “Eastern Turki – English Dialect Dictionary”.

Hey, experts on the Uyghur language: In his new Eastern Turki Dictionary, Gunnar Jarring refers to the word a:ni in the text below from a late 19th century French publication (Grenard, F. (J.-L. Dutreuil de Rhins), Mission scientifique dans La Haute Asie). How does this word relate to the following xuarza:r eylemish?

Work at Universitetsbiblioteket, Lunds universitet for the 2nd edition of Gunnar Jarring’s “Eastern Turki – English Dialect Dictionary”.

Does anyone know the names of gates in the old, now non-existing city wall of Kashgar? In the typed version of Jarring’s original handwritten manuscript, the name qura dervaza appears (in a slightly different phonetic spelling). This may be a spelling mistake by the typist for qum dervaza. Or were there one gate called qum dervaza and another one under the name of qura dervaza? Yet another gate mentioned by Jarring was called yarbagh dervaza. What does yarbagh mean?
