Back at it with Episode #3 of #UNPaws. This week, we hit one last single off of the Hard to Earn album: âCode of the Streetsâ. For this gem of a beat, DJ Premier isolates and flips a bar from the Bernard Purdie drum break on Melvin Blissâ âSynthetic Substitutionâ, a #Funk classic that boasts hundreds of sample cameos throughout the halls of Hip Hop. Layered on top of the #BoomBap is a choice two-bar loop sampled from Monk Higginsâ âLittle Green Applesâ, plus a slice of the intro from Boogie Down Productionsâ âWord from our Sponsorâ. Along with the slick scratches, the drum pattern was definitely a fun challenge for a turntablist to figure out on the oneâs and twoâs.
âItâs the #Code of the Streets..â

Welcome to Episode #2 of #UNPaws. This is the second installment of a series that aims to break down and remake sample-based Hip Hop classics. In doinâ so, an even deeper goal is pursued, which is to highlight turntables as both instruments of musicianship as well as tools of composition. Continuinâ with the singles of Hard to Earn as tribute to its thirty-year reign as a classic Hip Hop album, this episode breaks down and remakes âMass Appealâ, one of Gang Starrâs most signature tracks. DJ Premier samples a single bar of Barry Miles playinâ the keys on Vic Jurisâ âHorizon Driveâ, and itâs perhaps the simplicity of the sample and the straightforward chop thatâs set it so deep in stone for so many Hip Hop Heads. The samplinâ of the drums, however, gets a bit more complex. Sampled from EPMDâs âYouâre a Customerâ, the kicks seem to loop with an Offset Backspin, plus a few Fills for a further flip. While itâs well known that Premier is an avid MPC wizard, Iâd still bet his experience as a Turntablist informed the way he flipped them drums and initially came up with the pattern for the beat. To say the least, the production on this track fits the #Paws of a DJ like a hand to a glove.
âBut Iâm so real to them itâs scary..â

Introducinâ #UNPaws, a series where turntables serve as the instruments they were never meant to be. Call it a nod to the Pause Tape Method, as well as an homage to choice tracks from way back when. In lieu of the Thirty Year Anniversary of Hard to Earn, this drop is a remake of the Gang Starr classic, âDWYCKâ, featurinâ Nice & Smooth. Top tier production from DJ Premier, paired with the raw emceeinâ of Greg Nice, Guru, and Smooth B. Itâs no surprise that this track has stood the test of time given how everybody on it came with their A Game. Big Ups to all these legends, and RIP to Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal.
