A few weeks back I was walking through the infamous soi 4 district of Bangkok. where the infamous Nana Plaza stands. Four floors of go-go-bars and strip joints. Real classy. An area of the city packed with s*x workers and s*x tourists.
All of a sudden, outside the Stumble Inn, I stumbled into this lone piece of footwear on the pavement.
Slightly the worst for wear (B52s, Beer Tiger) I picked up the glass slipper and screamed, "Cinderella, Cinderella! Where art thou?"
"More to the point," I heard an American lady say beside me, with more than hint of cynicism "Where's the f***$ng prince?"

Charles Sobhraj (born 6 April 1944), also known as the Bikini Killer, is a French thief, fraudster and serial killer. He preyed on Western tourists throughout Southeast Asia during the 1970s. He was nicknamed The Splitting Killer and The Serpent.

Sobhraj allegedly committed at least a dozen murders. He was convicted and jailed in India from 1976 to 1997. After his release, he retired as a celebrity in Paris. In 2004 he returned to Nepal, where he was arrested and tried. In 2005 Sobhraj received a sentence of life imprisonment.

In 2007 news media reported that Sobhraj's lawyer had appealed to the then French president Nicolas Sarkozy, for intervention with Nepal. In 2008 Sobhraj announced his engagement to a Nepali woman, Nihita Biswas. The authenticity of the couple's relationship was confirmed in an open letter from American conductor David Woodard to The Himalayan Times.

Sobhraj is widely believed to be a psychopath. He enjoyed the attention, charging large amounts of money for interviews and movie rights. He has been the subject of four books and three documentaries. Sobhraj's return to Nepal, where he was still eagerly sought by authorities, is believed to be the result of him wanting attention.

In 2003 journalist and writer Tom Vater travelled to Kathmandu in hunt for stories. While there he had an opportunity to interview The Serpent. In this conversation at the Patpong Museum, Bangkok, Thailand, Vater talks about meeting the serial killer face to face.

In 1988 Steve Rosse took a break from a career in the New York City film and television industry for a three-month holiday on Phuket, an island off the Western coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. He decided he liked Phuket more than he liked New York, and without any idea of what he'd do for a living, he took up residence on the island. He supported himself, and eventually his wife and children, for most of the next decade as a freelance journalist and columnist. His column, "The Rock", appeared in The Nation, Thailand's Independent Newspaper, every Sunday for five years. Steve decided to leave Thailand to return to the USA to give his children a better education, support his wife, and give his elderly mother the care she required. During a delving day in 2003 he promised to return to Thailand to finish what he had started. So here we are some twenty years later. Steve flew to Thailand and thus fulfilled a promise made to himself all those years ago - to return to Thailand and make a life for himself for his remaining days. Armed with only his stories, a fledgling YouTube channel, and a one month visa Steve Rosse has begun his journey to shock the country all over again. Rosse met with J.d. Strange for a steak and egg dinner, some drinks (Tiger beer for Strange and coca-cola for Steve), and after the meal the pair crossed over to Studio66 to record a conversation about how the two first met (on a web forum some fifteen years ago) books, Thai fiction and the current YouTube phenomenon.
